Well, Sadie, my black lab and walking companion seems to be trending downward, quickly. Hardly eating, dropping weight quick and now peeing blood. If she makes it through the weekend, we'll probably need to put her down very soon. Looks like I'll be digging a hole this weekend.
I know the feeling all too well and it sucks really bad. We had to put our oldest pit down due to a stomach tumor about two months ago.
Scout, 3 year old Golden Doodle. 50lbs of stone cold small animal assasin but the sweetest dog you'll ever meet. Currently SNORING like a freight train. She sleeps with her legs up like that all the time.
Just curious if you actually hunt with your doodle or if it is more of a backyard assassin... The wife has been hinting at a doodle...
nah, she's a killer not a retriever. Reminds me of a cat, she just likes to kill small furry animals. And birds. Plus, their fur is horrible for pretty much every hunting scenario. Coat is super dense and 3 different textures. It takes on water rather than repelling it so they would freeze in most waterfowl scenarios...then if upland bird hunting every single little burr and sticker would get embedded in their coat. But I have heard that labradoodles are not as bad in that regard as labradors have that short course hair- golden retrievers have the long soft hair. G-doodles do not shed though, so that's nice. And they're great little dogs. Got a great personality and very smart and is a people pleaser. She'd be a great little agility competitor; she's super fast and nimble. I say little; she's 50lbs. Her mama was half standard poodle and half golden retriever; her daddy was all standard poodle. She is a bit smaller than her mama. Only bad thing about them is they get chronic ear infections. You pretty much have to pluck out all their ear hair with hemostats at least once a month. Start doing that when they are pups, we did not and now we have to have her sedated by the vet every 4-5 months to have it done. If you want a medium/small-ish dog that you can hunt, check out Brittany Spaniels. If you want a medium dog that's a great family dog and doesn't shed, g-doodles are a good option. I'd be OK if the wife wants another one after this one.
My wife's family had poodles. And our lab shed like crazy. So a non shedding dog was a win in her book. I like dogs, like to have them outside, scent trailing or looking for shed (not, not a shed dog, but a good nose will pick up scent), hikes, etc. Brittneys are probably a non starter. I tried to pitch German shorthair or Weimereimer and have been vetoed. Long hair dogs like Irish setters may get an eye roll...
Damn dog is asleep on my hand and I really gotta take a leak and need go to bed but he is right in the middle of what seems to be a pretty successful squirrel hunting dream. As a fellow hunter I don’t wanna be the one to ruin his squirrel hunt...
Ohh man Wop. That picture was me 11 years ago. Congrats! May she bring huge amount of joy to your family
Thanks it's been 16 years since I had a puppy to deal with. She is bringing back a' lot of memories of my Leroy.
We have a GSP. They are great family dogs and ours had great hunting instincts. She used to point birds, rabbits, and squirrels without any training. Unfortunately, she has lost that as I lost time to work with her once we started having kids. GSPs require a lot of attention and exercise to burn off their energy or they become problematic due to boredom. They are very healthy in the prime but can have multiple health problems as they age. Ours is 12 years old and has arthritis in the hips and several benign tumors. We currently have her on antibiotics for an infection that has her bleeding out the anus. Unfortunately, we will probably have to put her down in the antibiotics do not clear up that issue. Absolutely, a great dog but I would wait until my kids are older before having another. It is hard to give a dog of that breed enough attention when you have young kids.
During our walk today the dogs found a badger hole. I'm glad it wasn't home! Sent from my SM-G981U using Tapatalk
They don’t usually like sitting next to each other since he’s a old grumpy man and she’s a little spazz Lol. But occasionally they surprise me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Here’s my buddy Evie, everyone was worried when we brought out first child home just bc she is a Pit mix. She’s the best with our girl and let’s her do anything to her without giving a lick. I’ve always had Pits or Pit mixes, there one of the sweetest dogs out there that get a bad wrap. She gets comfortable anywhere, Heres a few pics of her.
