What percentage of people driving in large suv's actually need them?

Did you ever notice how many people are driving in a large suv with nothing else in it?

Typically I'm one of these people that say if people want to waste their money on something then let them. However I find myself really annoyed when I see so many people in 30' suv's with no other people or stuff in it. Just one person.

It has to be a mainly a status thing because the smaller suv's these days can haul a lot of stuff that would serve 99% of the general population.

    Thoughts?

How do you know that person does not have 5 kids at home, and the said person just needed to run to the store for something real quick, and did not have another vehicle at home?

If my wife had a long commute, or had to drive on an interstate or major highway on a daily basis, I would have her driving the largest SUV I could afford.

And what is wrong with status symbols if one can afford it?

I completely agree. What annoys me more is guys driving pickups with nothing in the back! I can't believe they don't drive around with a full load all the time. What a waste of truck space. Its even more annoying if they is only one person in the cab. They might as well just make them one-seaters and get rid of the bed, or give them to someone that will use it!

My dad recently explained to me that back in the late 70s, some tax or EPA requirement or something like that was placed on station wagons which were considered "cars." "Trucks" were exempted... Voila... The disappearance of station wagons and the appearance of SUVs. The same bigger is better concept on a different chassis is alive and well and the government can't seem to figure out that people are rebellious by nature and like a spoiled child; the more you say they can't have something, the more they will desire it and find sneaky ways to get it.

How do I know? Just by the high number driving large suv's with nobody in it. They can't all have 5 kids at home.

What is wrong with it? Not completely sure but I'm annoyed. Thus why I posted. Ever been annoyed with something but you are not sure why?

I don't worry about what other people drive or what their reasons are for driving them. Life's too short. Currently, I find myself contemplating what my next endeavor will be and how I can enjoy myself doing it.

Nope, and I have never understood this phenomenon.

    Nope, and don't care.

My wife and I will be purchasing a new 4runner in the near future. We were ONLY looking at larger SUVs. Frankly, I like the height, visibility, and overall safety of a bigger vehicle. Pack all of the safety features you want into a sedan, but in the end...in really bad accidents, size usually wins.

I am not considering a 4 runner a large suv. Its the 4 row surburbans and excursions type of vehicle and then they can't park the darn things.

The only 30' vehicle I have ever seen is a limo.

My wife drives a Suburban daily. Why? Because bigger is better and sometimes she needs the room to haul things. I also have peace of mind knowing that if she was to get in a bad wreck she's safer. BTW, a Suburban is 19' long.

    What do you drive Brad?

I have a truck for towing our
camper, we both drive cars to work.

People can drive what they want, I find it funny some drive SUV's who do not use any of SUV main features. I would guess about 1/4 of people who buy an SUV actually use the main advantages of owning a SUV.

I find it monetarily silly on their part....but so is a LOT of things I do.

I could live without the weekend bar tabs and a 2004 Crew Cab truck 2 states away only being used by my workers for lawn care.....but I choose to have em anyway.

    To each his own.

The 30' is an exaggeration to make a point I'm talking bout the big ones.

We drive a 2004 honda accord and a 2008 ford explorer.

So it is about safety more than status in our society as a whole? Just asking.

Listen I'm not ripping on anyone that drives a large suv. I guess I'm annoyed with the very high amount of people that drive these things because the chick thinks its cool to drive from a status perspective. Many I bet don't have a pot to piss in and but yet they NEED this big *** suv.

Its an observation on our society.

I traded in a full size Chevy van for a suburban and the suburban gets way better mileage but I never had anybody give me grief about owning a van.
I don't carry as much stuff as I used to back when I bought it in 2002 but it's great for hauling hunting stuff ie: bags of corn. Stands. Gear. Others and all their gear and it's paid for.

Bottom line it's about being safe and prepared and able to help others if need be.
When we travel in groups we take one vehicle instead of three.
When the hurricanes kept coming at us I was always able to get out and haul stuff around. Their was not a little compact car on the road for days.

I know its not your point but I like how these left wingers will mess with some lady driving a gas guzzling SUV but you never hear them messing with rednecks in their huge 4x4 truck:)

You only need one more generalization in that paragraph for the hat trick. So close!

    Are my generalizations inaccurate?

I really don't care what the rest of society's reasons are for owning giant vehicles. Our reasons are for safety of my wife and kids as well as being able to stuff as much of our **** in there as we want when we head to the cabin for the weekend.

I don't understand people who get annoyed by things that have no effect on them.

I'm pretty sure Brad is calling your wife shallow, Dan.

    You gonna take that?

They may be. If someone looked at my wife while driving down the road and thought that, I know they would be.

That is an interesting point to ponder.

Its not even about gas. I still can't put my finger on it.
