Way to go, Avant! So is this the first deer on the books for us? I believe so. I've been tied up with the newborn but plan to get out this weekend.
Well going through my 14,300 photos from the cam I pulled a couple weeks ago and came across this guy/gal. We have bears in the area but not a lot. Definitely not something we catch on cameras very often. To me this appears to be a pretty decent size bear. Big enough that it will stick in my mind walking in/out in the dark.
Nice job Avant. I got busted last night by a big 8 pt just as I was climbing down. I'm going to move my stand and try and put myself in a better spot in the same general region. The wind was never in my favor in my last spot. Hopefully moving to more of a crosswind will be better.
Well I headed out last night to pull some camera cards and freshen up my mock scrapes and at one of my stand locations where I am loaded with acorns I have two 8 pointers on camera. One is a basket 8 and the other one is pretty wide and definitely a nice deer for my area! Hopefully they stick around another week!
Hey guys, sorry it's been a while since I checked in. I'm a college student and have been extremely busy over the last couple of weeks. Had a very interesting opening weekend that I thought I'd share. I hunt on about 110 acres of land with my brother. We are the only 2 that hunt it during bow season. On Sunday night, my brother shot a nice buck, the smaller of the two that I had posted a picture of earlier. He let me know that he had shot one so I got out of my stand and walked over to his. At this point, it was dark. We found good blood where the deer had actually gotten hit with the arrow, turned and fell onto a rock, and got up and ran. After that point we couldn't find any blood with it being dark out. We waited until the morning (luckily I have late classes on Mondays) and went back out to look for him. Couldn't find any blood. My brother tells me that he feels he put a good shot on him. Maybe 6-9 inches behind the shoulder, middle of the body, which to me seems like at least 1 lung. He tells me that when the deer turned and fell, he could see that the arrow had gone all the way through, but the broadhead was sticking out the other side. I really have no reason to believe that he would lie to me about either thing. After searching for 2 hours and finding no blood at all, we both had to return to school. That night, he returned from school and searched again, this time with two other guys and a guy with a bloodhound. After looking for hours, they were only able to find one other drop of blood. At this point, there was no finding him. Since then, the deer has not shown up on any camera we have running on our property. The whole situation is very discouraging, considering that by all means that deer should be and probably is dead, whether it be on our property or not. Since that night, neither of us have hunted the property. We walked all over looking for that deer, so we thought we would try to stay out for a while. Anyway, sorry for the novel haha. Congrats Avant, glad you were able to get us on the board! Unfortunately, we do not have high enough doe numbers on our property to shoot does every year, so I will not be shooting one. Hopefully my season turns around, because I have been pretty discouraged about the hunting season after that night. Nevertheless, good luck everyone!
A few seasons back I had something very similar happen to me and a friend. We looked and looked and never did find the buck. We still had a good season and I think if we learn from these situations it makes us better archers and more aware of shot placement. Sent from my SCH-S968C using Tapatalk
That's a bummer dude. But we've all lost a deer. It's a hit and it humbles us. The important point to be made is that we have a duty as archers to be responsible and do our best to ensure high lethality shots and a solid tracking game. It's tough and I wish y'all a quick mood recovery and successful season!
Well yesterday I had four at the stand. None worth taking. The buck I wanted I jumped walking in. He was on his scrap line and was working them over. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Horrible hunting weather here in WI this weekend. It's 82F here right now with a SSW wind at 12-18mph. Decided to try the blind tonight over our food plot as it's about the only thing that works with this kind of wind. Hope the Harvest/Blood moon with the eclipse gets them stirred off their beds early. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Sitting in this blind has reminded me I need some sort of bow rest or kickstand. Prefer something light that i don't need to remove from my bow to shoot. Also would prefer it to keep the cam off the ground if possible. Any recommendations? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
