This morning had a tall spike buck at 38 yards, no shot chance through thick bush, also had a total of five doe mill through. This evening I saw nothing, will be in stand tomm. morning if this 101 degree temp breaks..................I feel like death warmed over. Dave
I haven't seen a deer in two weeks ... this has been the worst year for me as far as deer sightings ... grrrrrr
Im with you on that Tony.....we can't buy a deer sighting hardly. 7 of us have hunted this 2nd gun season, and we only have 2 deer down. I'm back at it in the morning with the boom stick. After the morning sit we are going to do a drive to see if we can't get some tags filled.
I am feeling a little better this morning. Going to suck down a cup of coffee or two or three or four.............then hit the woods this morning. Edit: Well it is suppose to be a southwest wind...................it is showing a direct east wind right now, the one direction I dont have a stand up for. Geeeezy peeeezy............if it isnt one thing it's another. May have to use the climber if I can make it work. Edit Again: Showered/dressed and ready to go. Went to the garage to get the climber and load it in truck and....................dangit, the realization that it is setup in the woods hit me. I left it setup from a week and half ago Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy back in the woods. Guess I will just leave in a few minutes and go down to the farm and see what the wind is actually doing then decide what to do from there. It is going to be one of those days !!!! Dave
Actually it is legal. Mr. Thomas grandson has a huge bait pile about 60 yards in the woods off the back pasture. Now does it work and bring in the big boys? I am not to sure of that, I am sure the older deer know his movements and simply wait until dark to visit the pile. He has not shot one deer off that bait pile. Hmmmm, could it be because he shows up at 3:30 pm when sunset is at 4:37?)))) Anyways, after I hunt this weekend and see what the deer are doing as far as movement and late rutting, this may be an option. I know bucks will want to feed up to regain thier strength and what not from the long rut. Dave
Dave, I wouldn't use it to hunt over but to get them in your area and hold them. We set up a feeder one year and the only thing we ever saw during daylight on it was turkeys. We know the deer were using it but at night. You will probably need to set up between the corn and their bedding area if possible. You might catch them leaving the bedding area early for a little snack. I shot my first and biggest buck doing this. Good luck, hope you're feeling better. Clint
As our gun season closed, it marked the first time ever that I did not tag a deer.... After getting skunked this morning, we did a couple deer drives. The first one produced the walkers jumping "Buddy", a 2 year old 8 point that I have a lot of pics of. I had him dead in my sights at 30 yards, but I opted to let him walk. 4 other does were jumped, but they eluded us. The 2nd drive was a bit more successful. One of the walkers missed a doe, but 2 of them ran to me and my cousin. He got the first crack at them, and he rolled the biggest of the 2 does. I had a brief shot at the other doe, but was in line with my cousin, so I couldn't shoot. It was a fun weekend hunting with the family, but I'm ready to get after it with the bow again next weekend.
Saw a few deer tonight but nothing close again. Just a couple small bucks that ran through quick, my son got to watch them spar for a few minutes on the other side of the field. That made his hunt. I'll try to get out next weekend at least once, after that will be hit and miss at best. Not looking good here boys.
Saw nothing Sunday morning...................did not feel well so I skipped the afternoon hunt. Tony.................Time to move those stands bro, you have bow hunted and gun hunted out of them. Sounds like the deer have those areas pegged. I plan on movong a few of mine for the same reason. I allowed Mr. Thomas grandson to sit a few during gun season. So it is time to move them to what I hope are better spots, we shall see. Dave
I will be out all day Wednesday with rifle in hand ... I will be still hunting / scouting the entire property for my late season bow spot ... and I WILL shoot a fawn during late season bow ... we need the points and I can always use the meat. ... so I need to change my poll answer from my thread :D
Ok so I rethought my post from last night, I am going to be limited on my sits but I still have a chance. I'm seeing deer and even bucks so its just a matter of putting myself in the right place at the right time. I will be sitting some stands that I would normally pass up the next few sits because I feel like the deer have me patterned as much as I have them patterned. I'm getting does close but the bucks are popping out in areas that I don't have a stand and no good place to put one. So the new approach will be to try to catch them in the transition areas in the woods before they get to the fields. It's a long shot but worth a try.
Well. I am back from Washington a few dollars lighter and a ton of information heavier. I saw plenty of blacktail deer and roosevelt elk, but nothing within bow range. This was actually my first guided hunt for any native species in the US. I doubt I'll use one again though. I really feel I could have pulled off a DIY hunt had I spent more time researching. Live and learn, I guess. I do look forward to a return hunt in Washington, in the near future. Those huge trees, ferns, and steep hills were cool to see. Keep after it guys! We'll do this!
Will did any one have any luck in Washington? Keep at it boys we are in this to win thanks to all you guts for giving your all. I'm proud to call ya'll friends Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk
No go on the new propeety this weekend, as there will be muzzleloaders out on it. I'm still holding out hope that I will get a couple sits in there this season. I'll be on our farm this weekend sporting the blaze orange, but carrying my bow.
