I truly thought I was going to get him tonight. I need a north west wind to get down to him. He came out about 60 yds from me again, but this time I had does on my end. I thought for sure he would come on down. He at in the hay field until dark and then slipped back in the corn. The does camp out under my tree. The did get south of me and I thought I was cooked, but they did not catch my wind. I have a stand set where he is coming out, I need a North West wind. Tonight we had a SE wind. Come on North West wind, he feels safe behind that corn. I am not going to push it, I am going to remain patient. If you guys see me getting risky, feel free to sack punch me.
Have you not learned a thing from Uncle Trigger? Forget the wind, just hunt...or something like that. Good luck.
I have not seen him up close yet, 50-60 yds away and never a clean view. I don't have binos yet I guess 145-155, he is extremely tall G2's and G3's. I am also going off Uncle triggers sighting, he was 200 yds away and had no issues seeing the rack. Neighbor description is pretty close from what I can tell.
Sorry I couldn't answer your texts Germ, I was pinned down in my tree by some does and bucks and I didn't want to risk the light of the phone. Good luck bud.
Your son and I are impatiently waiting on a kill.:D Him to have his dad live up to the big buck talks and me, well more cause I want to see a picture of this dude.
I would have to disagree with that strategy Germ. Get on him now.. he's there now. Once the does start to pop.. he's gone. Bucks around here were REALLY beginning to really socialize with the does. Not chasing or anything.. but starting to really "feel" them out. And the older bucks are really starting to open up the scrapes and getting their "feelers" out there. Won't be long til he blows out of there. Find the nearest scrapes (to his bed) Germ.. I bet you find your buck vulnerable there. And the eves are WAY better still. At least here throughout Illinois. The breeding season is beginning. By my estimates you have maybe 10 days before he's ALL over the place after trim.
He is hanging out on the south side of the field. With a NW wind I can come around the south side to the river, and then walk back to the hay field. Sunday I got in the boat and swung around the back side of the hay field. Had a SW wind so my scent was blowing back down the river. Set the camera. To hunt the South side I need a NW wind. Where my stand is set there is a funnel where they walk down the the bottom. North of me it's pretty much blocked by the terrain and down trees. If he's on the south side he has to take this funnel to get to the river bottom. it's a NW wind or no go on the south side. Looks like a west wind tomorrow, I have a tree for a west wind in that wood lot. They other issue is I have to be able to get out of there. The stand is right in front where he is coming out. I can sneak up the old river bank and into the stand.
North is straighup almost The south white block is where he is coming from the corn. North west wind I can walk up south lane and back up to my stand. There is 20 foot elevation change from the bottom to the hay field. 0
I am sitting near one now. I agree I do not have long, but there is no way a SE wind to hunt him. My scent would have blown back into the corn where he beds. I have a plan for breeding season also, if I screw this up, LOL
Looks like SSW all week, the stand is 22' up, I think Wednesday I am going to go for it. Ok someone sack punch me
The one thing on my side, if he's in the corn there is a 20ft difference from the bottom to the top where he is bedding. Morning hunt would be tough, being he may be in the hay eating. damn this is fun
