When I have a deer at 15-20 yards and it is completely unaware that I am in its world. I just love that feeling and that makes the trip worth while right there. Just being able to observe them acting naturally and going about their own business. I feel like I learn something from every encounter I have like this. From knowing when I can and cannot move to seeing how the deer constantly is checking its surroundings for danger. Just knowing I have entered their world without letting them know gives me a great sense of accomplishment. Wether I intend to shoot that particular deer or not. Sometimes I learn more by not killing a deer. And it might help me pick the right time to draw on the next monster that presents a shot. Now that truely would be the best feeling in the world. I hope to get that feeling quite often this season.:d
When you step back and just think about it....there really is something special about it! I know what you mean....and thats why we bowhunt.....not becuase we can look through a 10 power scope and shoot em hundreds of yards away but rather we have to work and get to know our deer....find there patterns....get into there "zone" undetected....and place a lethal arrow. And if you can make it all happen.....well thats one hell of an accomplishment if you ask me!
yea brother, you nailed it. that's what i'm talking about. It's cool when they walk right underneath you, & they don't have a clue. I like doing that while hunting on the ground too. It's one heck of a rush.
Good post John and there is little doubt that I learn more about a whitetail when I don't shoot then when I do shoot. Just a couple more days and I'll have my first sit, Thursday evening when Matt and I join GMMAT in his neck of the woods.
Some people just dont get it when you tell them that you are content just sitting there watching the goings on around you. Even though the kill is a important part of the hunt, it is not a necessity to have a good day in the woods. I have learned far more from deer that I have NOT killed than the ones that I have.
Amen John As i sometimes say, its not allways the kill, but the thrill its self that drives us. good post!!
(Think monster truck rally commercial) Monday, Monday, Monday....Missouri! Archery! Opener! Good luck tomorrow John, thanks for sharing the feeling....I agree 100%
I agree 100%. Knowing that you've fooled them enough that you COULD shoot them if you wanted, well.....That's about as good as it gets right there. And over the years, I've learned that it's not so damn easy either.
