I would like to know if anyone on here has ever archery elk hunted totaly by themselves on a DIY hunt. If so l would love to hear about it...Your over all experience, pros vs.cons etc...You can leave physical conditioning out because I know all about that believe me.
do bear eat guys cleaning a elk? my bro killed a bow elk cow and it took him two days with help to get it out. I would love to hunt by myself but after the shot? maybe not.:D
My only two concerning issues are packing the elk out and wolves...Not to concerned about bears where I would be going. You make a good point though, I have a habit of getting away from other people and the numerous packing trips would be hell! Sure wish I had a reliable hunting partner or a horse.
Where are you thinking of going? I've lived in western Montana and Idaho all of my life and have elk hunted every season of that. The biggest thing is making sure you'll have either help to get the meat out, or means of keeping it cool. I wouldn't worry about wolves at all. They won't take the meat off your back. Another big aspect is what pack you will be using. I'm currently using the badlands 2800 which allows me to take a quarter or boned meat out on my FIRST trip, which saves times. Then grab the pack frame. Generally speaking, if I'm close to the truck or the road (under 1 mile) we will just quarter the elk out, bone in. Any further than that and i'm boning it out. You'll want a good durable game bag but also something that can breathe. I would reccomend the Alaskan bags. Biggest thing is getting those big chunks of meat off that carcass and airing out. I'm rambling right now, late night, but if you have any other questions please feel free to PM me. A good book to read would be Cameron Hanes Backcountry Bowhunting. Once you sift through the stories there is some great information.
