Yep all the farmers that raise turkeys in my area do it commercially, no farm direct that I have been able to find.
That sucks we have been with a farmer here for the last 15 years, he raises the turkey and then processes the week of and we pick it up fresh, it's pricey but worth it.
We buy chickens from a lady down the road. I may have to try and convince her to try a couple turkeys too. Or let her chickens get a little bigger. Right now, they range between 7 and 9 pounds. A couple more pounds and I could do chicken for Thanksgiving. the hell with "tradition"
You buttheads got me worried so I picked up a turkey while I was at the grocery store last night. Never in my life did I think I'd be the guy getting a turkey a month before Thanksgiving, but here I am.
I do not do Thanksgiving our daughter does. Though we have my canning and two side by side fridges and two full sized freezers and the out side deer freezer. All freezers save the deer freezer are chucked full. All pantries chucked full., canning shelves are running out of space. We could literally eat all year without going to the store, save milk and some fresh veggies. With grow light I could even have the fresh veggie thing under control need be. Turkey, venison, chicken, pork, and fish all set....FJB
Its a good move. We ordered Portillo's for the employees (small group of 10) and they wanted cheese sauce for their fries. Online would not let us order the cheese, so we called. They said that they do not have cheese sauce due to a cheese shortage. We are now at the point where PORTILLO'S DOESN'T HAVE CHEESE SAUCE. Let's Go Brandon.....
Last year I was given two 21# turkeys (big birds), they sat in the big freezer, until this year ... Glad I kept 'em and didnt use 'em, just took one over to my sisters yesterday for Thanksgiving and I'll take the other to her closer to Christmas .....
Guess I should have used the sarcasm font for some of that post. LOL I am finding turkey for .98/lb. Not a single bird less than 16 pounds. I don;t have freezer room nor do I need 16 pounds for 7 people.
My inlaws do a ham with the turkey, but it is not a spiral cut, it is a small crappy formed ham, hence my prejusticed view of ham on Thanksgiving.
Agreed! I usually have ham to go along with the turkey, which is cooked on the pellet grill. My turkey fryer turned into a skull boiler so it's no longer allowed to be used to cook food for the family, per my wife. Truth be told, I'm not a big turkey fan. I'd rather have ham any day of the week.
yea, the only thing edible are the breast's, legs/thighs are stringy as all get out... they aint no Butterball thats for sure ...
