I'm leaving Friday morning for three days of hunting in Kentucky followed by 7 days in Missouri. The property my I'll be hunting in Kentucky is owned by a member of the church where my brother preaches. No-one has hunted this property in a long time. Not sure how long, but it's been years. We haven't put up any trail cams there (I only own one ) so we don't know what this property holds, but we did look it over very well earlier in the season. My brother just called me to tell me that the owner had just phoned him to say that the beans are out and that this morning he saw a "Texas Longhorn" out at the back of one of the fields. By that he meant that there was a buck there so big that it reminded him of a Texas Longhorn. He also said that he's been seeing two different piebald does on the property too. I'd love to get a shot at one of those. I'm not sure how excited to be that a big boy was spotted there. With the rut going he will probably be miles away or dead by Friday afternoon. Still, it doesn't hurt to hear these reports.
Thanks guys. It's been an interesting season so far. Two does down and I've already seen the biggest buck I've ever laid eyes on. That was this past Saturday in Arkansas, of all places and on public land to boot. He never got closer than 60 yards before he hit my scent stream. I sat all day and it was the only deer I saw, but seeing him was worth the all day sit. Maybe I'll see a bigger one this weekend.
No place very special. It's public land around Van Buren in Carter County. It's not known for big bucks, but we've been seeing a few big ones the past two or three years. This hunt means the most to my brother and I. When we were growing up our Dad used to take there to deer hunt every year. My Dad was a great guy, but he didn't have a clue how to hunt and as a result never tagged a deer in his life. He did, however, instill in all of us a love for the hunt. He's gone now and so is one older brother, but my brother Stan and I continue the family tradition. I wouldn't skip this hunt if someone offered me a paid trip to Iowa, Illinois or Kansas.
Awesome man, good luck! Seems like I've asked before, but are you SW Tn? My college roommate lives in NW Tn and I spent some time up there last winter duck hunting.
I'm in Munford, TN, about 40 minutes north of Memphis. A little too close for my liking, but since there's a Navy base close I stay around here.
Gottcha, we hunted the first morning in Ripley...then my buddy lives in union city. We stayed there the rest of the week.
