The deer is dead. The shot selection was horrible. Just because he was going to "get away" is absolutely no reason to make a poor decision to force a bad shot. There was not an ethical shot presented, so the deer walks. I hope you find him and I hope you learn to control your composure enough to not take unethical shots. Good luck!

Did you find the arrow? If so, what was on it? What did it smell like? Clues man, we need more clues. How did the deer react? Did you push him any by going after him too soon? A deer shot like that will need a lot of time to expire IMO. Lesson learned I hope. Do not take that shot, too little margin for error.

Take shots with the mindset I do... I am lazy when it comes to tracking deer. If I can't take a shot that I know will result in a short track job (broadside, quartering away, double lung, etc), I'm not shooting. Its worth too much to me to keep my hunting areas distrubance free to have to chase a deer all over the country side because I decided to "chance it".

As for the guys fighting... move on fellas. Look. I doubt anyone here who has hunted long enough has not wounded a deer. IT IS part of hunting. If you hunt long enough, sooner or later its going to happen, even if you do make good shot choices. A limb you didn't see, animal jumping string, or just plain ol poor shot execution. IT HAPPENS. I myself have wounded a few over the years and when I was young and stupid, took a shot that I never should have (facing me). I never found that deer and felt sick. But I learned.

There is nothing wrong with telling the OP "that was a stupid shot, don't do it again". I'm sure, if he's normal, he'll take it to heart and learn.

I wouldn't say you just shot a bad shot...more like you chose to take a bad shot. BIG difference.

My question...are you out looking for him? This post was around 9am. I hope you are, he's likely dead somewhere. Good luck

Well boys I found that deer today it was less then 100 yards from where we stopped last night but u will never in a million years believe what happened. I was walking up the holler and saw two guys on a flat so I went up to where they were to tell them what I did. Anyway when I got up there that's where my deer laid. I told them the whole story and they didn't believe me and by god refused to let me have my deer. I got pretty hot and so did they so instead of fighting over a dang deer I just left. I mean I felt bad about not tagging it but by god when I call forestry dept and wildlife and they don't come to me to hell with it. Another thing all you that say that's a bad shot kiss my you know what. Lol I killed the deer. Don't recall ever calling anyone names either.

Please play nice... a lot of impassioned opinions. I for one don't fault your shot... you got like 2 feet of penetration. In fact I just started a post about that very thing, see "Shoulder phobia."

I do fault your decision to take up the track too soon... but you readily admitted that in your first post. I had to learn that the hard way as well. Next time wait a couple hours and you'll be fine.

Please don't take criticisms personally on here though... we all set ourselves up for that when we post. I have learned that the hard way a couple times too. It's all good... just play nice.

OK. At first I defended you. But now that your telling me and practically everyone else to kiss your ***, I can't refuse.

No one in their right mind is going to say that shot is a good one to take. Let me leave you in on something about bowhunting. This something that every single hunter should strive for and all decent hunters already know. When you take a shot at an animal, do so with the intent to kill that animal cleanly and quickly. This means double lung or heart shots.

Taking poor shots like that and finding the deer days later is not killing an animal cleanly. It's maming them in hopes they die from the injuries.

So legit you found it but hey I wouldn't have went home without it. I'd be ready to chuck'em. The arrow should be pretty good proof. It's got to match all the rest in the quiver. Stoked you found it.

Was it on someone elses property?? No chance I'm leaving that deer if I had permission to be on that ground.

Yeah - not buyin' it either....what happened to the arrow? AND that 'by God' was a very poor judgment taking that shot PERIOD! Not even on the last day of season with the biggest buck of my life would I risk that shot - the animal deserves much more respect. BTW - You would never be invited to hunt with our crew nor be allowed to hunt on any properties where we would have any say/influence in the matter with this shameful display of lack of character/ethics, ignorance, and arrogance - LOL(sarcastically)!

glad I got this in before a lock

That was a bad shot, and no, I will not kiss anything. You were going for the spine? What.

I have just one question for the OP. If you could go back in time, would you take that same shot?
