    Hi,

Just joined this forum and it is great. One thing that has me fascinated is Turkey hunting.

I dont know anything about turkey hunting as we dont have them wild in Aus.

So are Turkeys native? Do they live and breed in the wild?

Are they regulated - are there seasons and tags or permit for them?

Do lots of people hunt them?

    Any comments are appreciated!

    Cheers,
    James

Wild turkey are native to North America. They do live and breed in the wild. There are seasons on them, typically in the spring and fall. Spring only allows you to take a male bird (some states say a bearded bird, and since sometimes hens grow beards, a bearded hen would be legal and a gobbler without a beard would not be legal, technically) and fall is usually either sex. Lots of people hunt them, and I think it is growing all the time. It is a great bird to hunt and a lot of young kids are being started on hunting with turkey. I honestly look forward to spring turkey hunting as soon as the season ends. It's amazing having a big tom gobble up a storm on his way in to your setup and see him in full strut.

Both of these videos are my friends/family and I. Just a little sneak preview into real life turkey hunting.

Turkey hunting takes place during the second most beautiful time of the year besides early fall when the leaves are changing in archery. Hearing a gobbler on the roost then seeing the sun rise over the budding foliage... It really doesn't even matter if you shoot a gobbler. I am really getting pumped now. If you ever get the chance to go spring turkey hunting, by all means go and enjoy yourself.

Love hearing those Spring Gobblers gobbling their heads off!

Sitting with my dad and his slate call on the edge of a field as the turkeys come up from the other side. He can't hear them like he used to so I tell him when I hear the gobbles n he calls again. Then he'll ask me, did you hear him again?! Good times with that guy!
