can somebody explain the fletching thing to me? i'm always wanting to learn so i figure the best folks to teach me is the folks i speak to everyday. i want to know about helicals the whole shabang the advantages, the disadvantages i want to know everything.
There is quite a bit to it, so i'll state some of the easier stuff first. Offset- Either right or left. This is when the vane is at a slight degree (usually 2 degress) from 90 degress of your nock. Most common in the newer shorter vanes where helical is harder to obtain. Helical- Either right or left. Helical is when the vane/feather wraps slightly around the shaft, much like a screw. This in turn gives you more spin in flight. Most commonly used on vanes/feathers that are 4'' plus. If fletching feathers you must first determine if they are right wing or left wing. There are a few fletching jigs that can give you helical on smaller vanes, like the Bohning Blazer jig. However, most small vanes are just flecthed with a slight right or left offset. Arrows spin as well with offset fletching. Some products, like NAP's Quickspin's or Twister's, are manufactured to work in an offset situation only. Lips and grooves give helical like performance in an offset fletch. Thats just a quick list of some info. It might be incomplete or missing vital info in some areas, but it's been a long day and the mind isn't working tonight too well Others should be able to chime in here as well Flecthing your own arrows is a great hobby to get into. It's both mentally and financially rewarding, I encourage you to get into it.
