Just got last years buck officially scored by the pope and young club. He made it in. Grossed 134 6/8, and netted 129 1/8. In another note, I have some big mature deer showing up Finally. This is my 26th sir of the year. Good luck all
That's a brute of a buck Englum! Nice job on the doe also! Things are really heating up here in Iowa. Had bucks chasing does all over my food plot this evening, nothing of size but I'm hopeful for tomorrow. Mini cold front sliding in tonight which will cause a rising barometer all day tomorrow.
Back on stand in Ohio. Trail cams don't show any shooters showing up in daylight yet. It was 78 degrees yesterday and there calling for 72 today. I only saw 3 does so far this morning.
What a day yesterday! Hunted yesterday morning and saw 7 bucks and 2 does. I had a 125ish eight pointer come in around 8:30 a.m. to some rattling and he walked within 5 yards of my stand! Had some smaller bucks work through and was quiet from 9:30-10 . I stood up at ten to get down and get something to eat and as I stood up I heard some twigs break behind me. Turned around and saw a brute 10 pointer ( guess around 150ish) coming out of the thick bedding area about 20 yards away. I grabbed my bow and pulled back - he was going to walk right through my shooting lane 25 yards away broadside . As I was pulling back my elbow got caught on my safety harness ( rookie mistake- buck surprised me so much I didnt flip the strap over my shoulder - first year wearing a harness) . I tried to wiggle my elbow to have the strap pop up on top of elbow so i could come to full draw and my coat rubbed against the tree and the buck locked right on to me. I manged to get my elbow all the way back and i squeezed off. Was so flustered I pulled the shot low and had a clean miss right beneath his front shoulder. Definitely learned my lesson on having to shoot behind my tree off the left side when right handed I need to make sure to check that the harness is over my back where I wont snag it lol.
No Shooters in Ohio this weekend. My father did shoot the buck I call Stickers at first light yesterday. He thought it was the Brow Tine buck, but it sounds like he had buck fever. He said he grunted and was getting ready to walk away and he let him have it. Buck went 25 yards and piled up.
I had a 95" 7 point show up yesterday morning on the Trail Cam. That's a good sign that they are starting to move during the daylight hours. I only saw a spike and about 8 does and fawns last night.
So Central OH is HOT! Like low 80s the last 2 days. Deer are stealing the corn during the night. I bought a new on sale cheap stealth cam and it seems to work pretty well. And I also have internet as of today woot! I hope it cools off soon as there are several bucks coming during the night. Wife sat in my lone wolf last night and had a few doe come up and play live decoy. I had my first sit at our new house tonight and I had a yearling under my stand a few times tonight I could hear them moving round after light and managed to get out with out spooking them. I'm hoping for a cold morning on saturday or nice evening weather the rest of the week. Cool weather and im going to go ahead and put down a trophy doe lol
Nice Buck coming in. I'm with you on the Heat in Ohio. I left there Monday at noon and saw the forecast for Tuesday & Wednesday and was glad I was leaving. I'm headed back to OH Friday afternoon. I'm just hoping that the trail cams are showing some bucks moving in the daylight. I may try some rattling this weekend. Good Luck to Everyone this weekend.
Nice cold front came through this afternoon, I raced home from work this evening showered kissed wife as she left for work and changed, while i was changing I looked out the window and 5 or6 big ole nannys and a few yearlings were already in the back yard, they looked spooked and while I was trying to figure out a way to get out of the house and to my stand without spooking them. When the koolaid man came busting through the trees and took up chase it was the heavy bodied 8 point from the photo above. I have been planning on letting him and the 9 point go and hopefully my wife would get a chance at them. He chased the does down to the apple trees, and I sneak out the laundry room door and set up in a spot over looking my back yard where the doe come to eat the corn I scatter around. I get a sweet big ol trophy doe at 20 yards and I start thinking about that 50 points and some fresh backstraps for dinner tomorrow night, Im waiting for her to get broadside for me and I draw ready to drop the hammer she about faces and sprints off I let my bow down and here comes that damn 8 point again grunting. I watch him for a while grunt at him a few time to see if i can get him riled up. he chases a few more doe off and my hunt is over for the night. Cool weather and they are out an hour before sunset and chasing hard. My brother is coming up this weekend, and I wont get much if any time in the stand. I will probably get saturday am until we head into the city for the football game and sunday morning. Lots of time left in the season so i will get plenty of sits I named that buck the homewrecker because everytime I get a shot at the ladies he comes in and ruins it.
Cool Story! I'm glad to hear they are starting to chase. I'm headed to Monroe Co, OH this afternoon. I'm not sure where I'm going to hunt tomorrow morning yet. I will let the Trail Cam pics decide that for me.
I saw the buck I call BrowTines this morning. 72 yards was as close as he got. I checked my trail cam pics at my other spot and sure enough, he was there first. If I would have gone to that stand this morning, it would have been a 40 yard shot. This is the first time we have seen him in daylight this year.
