well guys I'm planning on hitting Monday afternoon, all day tues & Wed. but I do have a lot of crap going on. My truck is still down & I'm trying to get a replacement asap. I've gotta sight in my 06 on monday morning, temp high will 26, and start packing for gun opener next Sat. I'm gonna try to hunt my other property maybe Tues/Wed and see what is going on there. We got about 2" snow so it'll be easy to spot them now. Hopefully I can connect with a slick head at least. good luck to everyone else.
Getting pretty frustrated! Had a buck come through at first light...couldn't tell what he was until I heard him grunt at 30 yards. Then a little while ago had a shooter out in the field about 50 yards...no shot! I can't catch a break!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Well after another frustrating weekend I'm about ready to break the piggy bank and go hunt in a fence somewhere. Saturday morning I had the same heavy 9 point from last weekend come in on me walking down a mowed path that would bring him 18 yards broadside. I had the camera setup at the spot I was going to stop him, came to full draw, and about 10 steps before he got broadside he hooked a hard right and came straight to the base of my tree and down the hill away from me, offering no shot. He was so close I could see the frost on his neck and his rack. Am I cursed or something? Hunted hard (and froze my tail off) the rest of the weekend without seeing another shooter. Saw a ton of deer on their feet moving around just none of the big boys. With temps in the single digits and highs in the low 20's the rest of this week I'm not sure if I'll get out or not. Hunting is for the birds.
That sucks justin, my brother shot one of our hit list bucks during gun season and the taxidermist said based off the nose to eye length he was 2.5. Was a 123" ten which kinda surprised us that he was only 2.5 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks bro, same here!!! We checked cams after we left that night and the buck that walked by me at 30 yards was my number one buck I showed you guys the pic of...FLYER!!!!! I CAN NOT BELIEVE IT!!!!! Couldn't sleep at all last night and can't wait to get back after him! We thought he was dead cause we heard the neighbor shot a tank of a buck with flyers off his g2's....well it wasn't Flyer!!! Pretty pumped about that! We are gunna hang another set across the train tracks a little ways west of where he came by me cause the pics show him working his way there to the fields of the vineyard...hopping by the time he gets there I have some more shooting light! There a few other bucks I wouldn't have a hard time letting an arrow fly on either, but nothing like him. Hopping it comes together! JZ, I feel you man...same here! It just needs to come together already!!!
Well boys, I've only got one thing to say... Bring on gun season and my rifle! Starts Saturday and I am ready to unleash. I'm not going to say this is the worst early archery season I've had, but as far as shooter bucks, or even opportunities, they were non existent. I did pass this guy Saturday morning. Then he caught my wind.. figures. Anyway, my Last Heart Beet food plot has been getting tore up so hopefully a big boy shows up late season for a snack, and I'll be able to put a whoopin on him
I went out hunting tonight and I can say it was damn cold out there. Had icicles hangin from my mustache. There are all kinds of tracks in the snow near my stand but nothing came through. I"ll hit again tomorrow night. What is your thoughts on the rut? has it come and gone? are they still in the rut? are they still chasing? Nothing has really even noticed or cared about my grunts/doe can calls. I was seeing deer in the early afternoons last week but haven't been out till tonight.
I think we are just past the peak, and with this cold and does herding up, the bucks have found a group or couple of groups of does and I think they're pretty well henned up, so to speak. I think there will be good movement the next week or so as they go group to group
I get off work at 6:30 this morning and am going to sit in a tree the rest of the day. I've finally wised up and I'm going to be taking a rifle this morning. First time I will be using one in several years. I've had a shooter within range 10 times this year and can't get it done. Time to lower the boom.
Good Luck Jake. Ive been working this new job trying to adjust to this shift. (6pm-6am). Saturday I will either be sitting with someone with the camera hoping to film a gun kill or I will have my bow trying to fill a gun tag with my bow. JZ I can only imagine the frustration you're feeling but Im sure when you pull it off Im sure it will be worth all the struggles. And Nick man.....shoot something already wont ya? haha
I tell you gents, I could have just cried today. After about 2 hours of sitting in the stand I had nothing but squirrels running around me. Then I noticed some yotes starting to make their way towards me. So i decided I was at least going to take one of those bastards down and got ready for them to step out of the tree line. I'm standing there for 10 mins and I hear a snap off to my right, turn my head and what do I see, the damn 8 point I been chasing for two weeks now. He took a different path then what I was expecting or even knew about. I shifted my feet so that I could get in a better position and my feet had frozen to my stand so when I moved they made the sound as if you step in something sticky on a floor. The buck bucked and took off. After I came down I went to take a look as what trail he was using and turns out that if I had not moved at all he would have walked about 10 yards in front of me broadside. FML
all I can say is "BUMMER" but that's why he's an 8ptr and not backstrap in your freezer! keep at it, you bound to connect.
another cold as night, temp at 14 and winds gustin around 15-20mph, right in my face. damn mustache kept freezing to neck warmer. seen nothing, heard nothing. I'm getting ready for gun opener this weekend. We're leaving on Thur morning. If anyone in Central Wi area is interested, I'll be camping near Black River Falls in Hatfield at the Jackson county campground on clay school road? I plan on stayin till Monday afternoon. Feel free to stop by. We usually stay in the back electrical area. We'll be in tent for the weekend. So look for a 10x20 shelter over a 12x10 canvas tent. I'm planning on bowhunting up there on Thur night and Fri. good luck to everyone out there still at it. I'll be off the computer Thur-Mon.
Hey Justin, if bacon and the STD buck don't die this year, do you think they will both be bigger next year? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hey guys, haven't checked in with you in a few days. So yesterday was a really great day. My wife and I both took mature bucks with our rifles. Mine doesn't score much, but he was mature so I was happy to shoot him. Her buck is really cool. He won't score much either, but we are gonna shoulder mount it for her. I'll do a little write up here soon for both of them. I've got to finish taking pics this morning for her and cape her buck out first though. I'll be back at it again on a new farm on thanksgiving morning. Still got 2 more buck tags for my bow, and the rut is still going strong here. Good luck and stay safe.
