2 different times 2 different bucks within 20 yards over 140”s came to full draw and they spooked before I could let it fly Mathews HTR, Sword 5 pin, Truball release, Goldtip XT hunter 300, QAD 125 gr Swept, QAD rest
Were you on the ground or in a tree? Just another story that makes me realize how difficult this really is. Still can't believe I was able to put something on the ground this year already.
1st one was public in a tree and 2nd was private on ground. Shortly after that someone stole my bow out of truck Mathews HTR, Sword 5 pin, Truball release, Goldtip XT hunter 300, QAD 125 gr Swept, QAD rest
Holy cow, that is a slew of bad luck right there. Well looking forward to your comeback this season. Best of luck to you...!
Been warm here the last 2 days and rain tomorrow all day. Nice front coming Thursday and ill be out in the tree. Got a pic of my target buck the last 2 days and ill be on that plot waiting!
So fun little graph based on my Bow Setup. This Graph shows where I can maximize Kinetic Energy and FPS without Deminishing returns in one or the other based on arrow weight and how my current Bow and Arrows are setup...only factor I change is the gpi of the shaft. So based on this, my target Arrow Weight should be 405 grains...I am currently running right around 608. I can gain 68 FPS and 10 ft-lbs. of Kinetic Energy by decreasing the weight of my arrow.
That’s interesting. I’ve shot anywhere from 425-525 the last 10 years. They seem to kill deer I do like the extra speed for smaller pin gaps. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Well that 608 I am currently running obviously worked fine. Only thing I noticed with it is the arrow "shish-kabobbed" the deer....the BH was sticking out one side, and Nock was sticking out the other and arrow had completely stopped. I got full pass through but just didn't expect it to stop inside the deer like that from only 15 yds. away. Just got me thinking I might need to narrow my arrow shafts, and try to increase the KE. Of course doing that now would require changing mid season, which I wont do unless absolutely necessary. But this gives me a target to aim for in off season to test out.
Definitely a rabbit hole to jump into! I’ve had what I thought was the best penetration with a micro diameter arrow at 425 as long as they didn’t hit bone. It’s fun to play with different arrows and weight. End of the day as long as you’re confident with your setup to be successful! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Im currently at 425 myself. Have shot in the 460 range. I think for the average guy anything in that range should work just fine. If you want to go heavier thats personal preference.
Well being new to the Archery world, and listening to all these different opinions on what to use, what not to use, etc. etc. etc.... I have come to the conclusion that I am going to use my own method for determining what to go with. I initially thought heavier was best just based on some of what is out there right now (i.e. Ranch Fairy is good example), but I am too much of a critical thinker and I over analyze everything, so I am going with a "data/statistics" angle based on my setup from now on...HAHA
That really is the best way, use what works for you. I lean slightly on the heavier side of a arrow. Think I'm in the 580 gr. Range. I like the balance of hard hitting, plus the weight helps alot with less noise from the bow. I do have some heavy arrows that I'm still working on, but haven't found a good point weight for them to tune to my bow. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
Back in the tree on that piece of private, would rather of went this morning on public but had father duties. Hoping a good buck gets on his feet during daylight with this front moving in. Gotta work tomorrow then hunting in morning on public Saturday my bday Mathews HTR, Sword 5 pin, Truball release, Goldtip XT hunter 300, QAD 125 gr Swept, QAD rest
[QUOTE="I am too much of a critical thinker and I over analyze everything, so I am going with a "data/statistics" angle based on my setup from now on...HAHA[/QUOTE] I love it! Over the years I've made so many Excel spreadsheets trying to find the BEST set up... using data/statistics, etc that I think I lost my friggin' mind. Now that I crossbow hunt, I just use what the mfg suggests. As for broadheads... well that's a different story
