    Good luck out there all!

I'll be headed to Illinois this weekend. The big boys seem to have gone into hiding but one never knows. I hope, and plan, to get us 50 more points this weekend, given the right circumstances.

I will hopefully be able to go to a stand thursday evening that is the only dry crossing through a big slough, which a great bedding area. I saw three does there the other evening and know there has to be a buck somewhere close by. Hopefully it will work out.

Good Luck mobow!! And everyone else too!!!

Wife called and said my doe tags showed up in the mail today. I run home after work to get them and am running late for a hunt. Just so happens I picked up another place to hunt close to home today so I figure I might as well check it out. I've shed hunted it a lot so I knew where to setup. There really isn't a place to put a stand in the old abandoned farmstead with the really short trees that are just a thick nasty jungle. I plan on ground hunting so I get there and the does are already moving. I sneak in find a good spot on the edge figuring the deer will come though the old yard/trees from a corn field.

I make a fast natural blind and get situated. I barely get done when 2 does and a fawn are heading my way. Just out of habit I glance back behind me to make sure nothing is sneaking around behind. I always try to setup so I have a shot behind me before they hit my wind and this time it was no different. I freaking notice a branch hanging in a shooting lane behind me I missed in my haste to get setup. Well no time to fix it and I wasn't expecting much to come by that way anyways.

The two does and fawn make there way by me but just out of range. No biggie as I was pretty sure I would see more. The branch was bugging me but now I didn't dare move. The trees are thick and the deer can be on top of you before you know it.

Wouldn't you know it... two does and another fawn are heading my way but swing around behind me. The first doe stops right in that shooting lane and the branch is blocking her vitals. She moves on and the second doe stops in the shooting lane and stands there for a long time. She was a big doe !! 25 yard broadside shot and I can't shoot on account of that branch. Geeze!!! :(

What a rookie mistake but I am loving this place !!! Does 2... me 0 !! LOL

    Congrats again Bobby !!

I had an interesting night. I had to sneak past a bedded young buck to get to my spot. Got setup without him knowing I was there. He was bedding in the brush about 40 yards from me. I had to sneak by him at about 25 yards.

After a bit a 2.5 year old 5x5 came in and the little buck joined him. Got to see them spare on an off for about 10 minutes before they wandered off.

I was setup in some cattails and could hear coon splashing around at the waters edge right behind me. Must have been digging up snails. I got up slowly to stretch after an hour off sitting. Damned if there wasn't a doe standing about 35 yards from me and she pegged me moving. I don't think the coons were helping me with their splashing/chattering. I slowly sat down and grabbed the bow. She didn't get a good look so was curious. At 8 yards she hit my shooting lane. I was drawn back with the pin on her shoulder as she was quartering to really bad. I needed her to turn more broad side when... SPLASH ( coons ) !! She bolted and ran back in the brush.

While I wasn't happy with the outcome... I had to chuckle at the coon as I was really enjoying being there. About that time the two splashing culprits peeked though the cattails at me. They were actually pretty good sized coon. They got within 5 yards before wandering back out to the water edge where they spent the rest of the evening splashing around and chattering to each other not 10 yards from me.

    does 3... me 0

Congrats LAEqualizer! That buck that I shot last year was the one that created the Fergie Clause! That was also my first ever deer that I shot! Regardless of the size you still took your first one which is an accomplishment! Congrats again!

Good deal Bobby! Don't matter how big, ya got it done man and that's all that counts!

Well, I wish I had better news from the Land of Lincoln. Saturday morning was a bust. No deer sightings. Saturday evening is a different story. I saw a small spike and a whopper of a 10 point. He stepped into the clover about a hundred yards away and I would guess him to be in the upper 130's to low 140's. Just a beautdiful buck. But, he wanted nothing to do with my grunting and walked off into the woods.

Sunday morning also a bust. No deer sightings at all. *sigh*.....which brings me to Sunday evening. I'm just gonna tell this story simply. I friggin missed a big doe. Yeah, I missed. Several things went wrong but the short of it is........No blood drawn. I ain't too damn happy about it, either. It's my first miss in like.......5 years. But, oh well. Back at it this weekend.

Congrats again Bobby! Nicely done, sir. Nicely done.

Congrats LA, meat is meat and 50pts we'll take. Sorry to hear that Mobow, but that's just practice for the big boy your gonna get. I'll be Florida training this week, so no bowhunting for me. I'll try to get at it next week. Weather here is definitely turned for the better, lows in the upper 20s at night, oh yeah! bring on the rut!

Thanks mobow and in da woods. Appreciate it. I will get another 50 with a nanny soon.

Sorry for your misfortune on the miss mobow. It's not "will it happen?" but "When will it happen", in bowhunting. (Now if you had missed the 10 pt, I would have to send out a hit on you.):D

Well, what can I say. It's been a tough season thus far and I loosed some penned up frustration. Little nubbin but hey.....Gonna be good jerky! Not much of a story, but here it is.

I dunno about.......5 Saturday evening I see a deer approaching in the distance, then lose it in the brush. A few minutes later it pops up on the logging road I'm sitting next to, about 10 yards away. No shot, quartering too hard. Turns a little, but still quartering so I hold back a little a turn the AlphaMax loose. I hear a dull thud. It sounded a lot like a broadhead hitting a turkey, not so good.

I didn't see the arrow hit but by the way the deer acted, I knew it wasn't great. Half hour later or so, I get down and inspect the arrow. Lots of junk, no blood. But it didn't stink. So I walk over to the last place I saw the deer and there's blood everywhere. Bright red blood. Whew.....ok.......it's not SO bad.

Well, the critter was headed the way I needed to go to exit the woods so I followed the trail about 100 yards (which was not difficult to do.) At a small creek, I stop to look around and see a deer bedded about 30 yards away. So I sit down, not knowing if it is the one I just shot or not. A few minutes later, the deer stands up (and it becomes obvious it is, in fact, the one I just shot) and walked up a hill. So I circled around and got the heck out.

John and I went back out this morning and recovered the deer in short order. We tracked roughly......150 yards with a pretty good blood trail. HORRIBLE shot. But, it worked. I gave the deer plenty of time and made the recovery. I'm not much proud of this one, but it'll sure eat good.
