Hey guys... just checking in. I see a few familiar names. I am here from the start of the contest to the finish. I really enjoy these contests and getting to know everyone. I don't even mind seeing Buckeye in here trash talking inbetween diaper changes. LOL

I will be just bowhunting this year. Things are really looking good this year for good bucks. So far I've scouted or got trail cam pictures of 4 bucks I would really be happy putting an arrow though...

What kind of sets do you guys like? I mean.....what type of situation do you look for to set a stand?

I'm a big funnel hunter. I focus on them exclusively, and probably to a fault. Inside corners and saddles are my favs I think. What I need to learn to do is to put those together w/ feeding/bedding areas. Bedding areas are certainly my weakness. I don't think much about them, don't know how to identify them.

But I will say......when I started hunting funnels and not sign........My success went up infinitely. It was a monstrous turning point for me.

Wow, what you said matches me to a T. It's like I wrote it myself.

At work I spend a lot of time studying topographic maps as a profession. Naturally, that carries over to my hunting and thus I look for natural funnels.

I know this sounds cliché but my favorite stand is a natural funnel leading to food.

I NEED to work on identifying bedding areas. I really don't have a clue how to except I know they need to feel secure there.

Really? Topos you read for your profession? Hm, u may have just become my new BFF. I have a fairly good understanding but always room for improvement. Especially the subtle stuff.

Inside corners. Pinch points. Overgrown fencerows. Natural funnels.

Bedding areas are my weakness as well. I can identify the big picture, but crowding close to them is a tuff one for me. I am improving season by season though. To get to the "secure area" is not always the easiest thing to do.

Water sources, food, and bedding are good, for doe slaying outside the rut. In the rut, I'm looking for "any" travel corridor. When doe feel safe in a travel corridor during the rut, bucks won't be far away.

Early and late season, I am looking for food and bedding entry and exit points.

I am all ears to learn guys.

Well, just because I can read and understand the topo's well doesn't mean I can tell you where the deer are ;).

I layout pipeline alignments in CAD. This requires me to quickly visualize what the landscape looks like in real life based on a topo map. I also understand the the town/range and section system very well which is exclusively used on USGS topo maps. This helps with determining distances very quickly. Just remember each section is 1 square mile or 5,218' or 1,739 yards.

I think the biggest thing people on here and hunters don't consider when looking at a topo map is the CI (contour interval). Does each line represent 2'? 5'? 10'? 20'? in elevation change. If you are looking at a 2' CI topo map compared to a 20' CI map it is a big difference per line on the magnitude of the changes in topography.

Is this helping or do you guys know this stuff already? If there is any questions you may have I can try and answer them????????

I see a theme here already guys. This looks to be the season we can all pool together and really learn some ****.....Let's just keep talking and sharing our experiences as our seasons wear on and I bet by the end of this year we're all considerably more versed in bedding areas. Looks like we have a real opportunity here for some learning.

GFY.......I understand the basics of topos. I understand the intervals and such......I just sometimes have a difficult time reading what it actually looks like. Especially with points. Some points and draws, on a topo, look the same. And sometimes the elevation isn't listed very closely to it so I have to locate the elevation marker, 2 of them actually, and trace them around to where I'm looking at to determine if it is going uphill or downhill.

This is the kind of thing I would like to get better at, simply being able to identify by looking. I would suspect they each have their own signature, I just need to be able to identify them more quickly. And, subtle changes as well.

I can look at a topo and show you a saddle, sometimes a bench or shelf, depending on how wide it is.......I can show you the main terrain features. I just want to get better at it is all.

And no, while you certainly can't tell me where my deer are..........I can. And learning to read maps better will help predict where they will travel.

Speaking of maps........How much do you do with arials? Those are ones I really need to learn to read better.

You know its about halph and halph for me I do have a stands that Over look Feeding and a water source that has what i call a 1 way street leading to a bedding area but I dont know why I am a Fan of Random spotos. Ill go look for what seems to be a good cover/bedding area but really dont see alot of movement b/c its so thick that people dont want to really mess with it. I say mostly this year I will Hunt my "1 way streets."

#1 IMO, I think a lot of people try and learn how to read a topo map without any idea how they are created in the first place. IMO, that would drastically help with interpretation. It's just like anything else, by if you know the in's and outs of how they were made you will be able to get yourself in the correct perspective when trying to look at them. Do you understand how topos are created?

#2 Yes, I work extensively with aerials. I could not do my job without them these days. In fact, in CAD I am able to scale and overlay the topo map over the aerial and vice versa.

Hey guys, I am just gonna let yall know a little bit about myself. I am eighteen and starting college this year, so I am not to sure how much time I will have in the woods. I will be in the woods as much as I can. My style of hunting is not really defined yet because I havent been bow hunting but for three years now. I really hope to learn alot from this team and you guys.

As you can see, I am from Oklahoma and I have access to about seven hundred acres in the central part of the state that has good oak trees and has held food deer in the past. I also have access to about a thousand acres in the northwestern part of the state that holds a ton of deer. I am hoping to make two trips up there this year. I found a lease here near stillwater that I am going to look at today, so hopefully this will allow me to get more time in the woods.

I am thinking about posting an ariel photo of my land, to get your guys opinion on some stand locations. Let me know if you want me too.

Wassup In Da Kitchen! I'm missin those sammiches you made already bro.....Man were those awesome!

Things are looking really good for a buck this year. Really good. Not promising a Pope and Young, but I'm realatively confident (as confident as one can be while hunting bucks w/ archery tackle, anyway) that I'll put at least one on the ground this year. Hell, I've got 4 buck tags, I sure as hell better!
