if you guys get a chance check out yesterday mornings hunt it was a fantastic morning in the deer woods Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
That was cool. To answer your question in the video, in my opinion the only way "meah" would have worked there is if you already had your bow in your hand, your release clipped on you were positioned and ready to draw when he was behind the cedar. If you could have drawn quickly as soon as his eyes went behind that tree that looks to be about 6 to 8 inches in diameter then yeah, a soft "meah" would have been a good way to stop him as soon as his vitals got past the tree.
Nice video JJ. I used to bowhunt near Bowlegs with my Dad years ago. I loved hunting Oklahoma. Happy for your success. Kill it n Grill it. Sent from my LG-E980 using Tapatalk
Thanks alot and yes I was definitely at full draw I would have had to crouch down because there was a limb in front of the vitals about inch an half thick. I really need to get back in there and clean it up a little more I cut the lil ceder with my hand saw and I'm gonna have to use my pole saw to clear a few other lanes where he walked at. If he would have gotten comfortable at the minerals he was a dead deer but like I say this guy's nose and ears was workin on him tough and just had him so jumpy I'm afraid if I'd taken a shot the arrow would have did something crazy. I've lost a big deer already in this set of woods and this buck was clearly a 3 year old at best very beautiful to the eye and maybe a 110 to 115 inch deer maybe this weekend I'm pulling out all the stops and I'm going in with my game face on and prepared. To be honest if I would have been setting down I could have shot him no problem but that's just it I was already standing anticipating he would just stay on the course before he backed up and went around the hickory. It was definitely a great encounter none the less!!! Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
Thanks There is definitely great hunting opportunity in this state. Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
This is just my opinion, but I wouldn't cut any more limbs or change a thing at this point. Earlier in the season maybe, but I'm always amazed at how a mature doe or a buck can walk in and immediately notice any changes to an area they are used to seeing. If you clear anything out and cut that limb they might be even more on edge next time.
Point well taken I cut well before season and didn't intend on touching it again there are lanes already there I think I put my stand a lil higher then what I cut for and there's this high branch that when I stand up if a deer is standing there behind it its blocking a shot but I'm like you these deer are smart creatures and I don't underestimate their senses at all so thanks for the reminder. Congrats on the doe. I went to shoot a coyote Sunday night and my bow string hit my binoculars which I have been using the bino straps on my new hss harness. Caused my arrow to nick tree limb and then back of arrow hit and snapped off and front half stuck in ground right by him. It’s hard not to laugh at how disastrous shot ended up. Nothing like it happened to me before. Glad it wasn’t on a big buck but would of liked that yote. Needless to say I won’t be using those binoc straps anymore and will take them off and hang them when in the stand.
I agree 100%. Consider, some limbs help add cover or break up your siloette. When that buck came in, he smelled something he didn't like...I suspect a hint of human odor (bare hands used to remove that mineral block maybe? Or just lingering scent from standing in that area), but it may have also been what he didn't smell (does hitting the area). Tweak the lanes at the end of the season or by summer of next. If needed, if maybe set a different (or relocate an existing) stand if he's a regular. But I suspect he'll be back without changing a thing.
Guys, this is killing me. I've got it bad. We don't leave until Saturday morning and I'm sitting here at work and all I can think about is getting out there after them. I've been trying to put data into a spreadsheet but I can't focus and I keep catching myself opening Google maps and looking at the terrain view of where we'll be hunting trying to figure out where the deer will move and what would be good back-up stand locations. Then I catch myself looking at the extended weather forecast. Then I find myself back on here. I really need to concentrate on what I need to get done.
LOL!! this used to be me and my hunting buddy who I went to Illinois with. We did the exact same thing!!
I went scouted with my good friend Matt last night.(smitty0220) Great to see him again, and I have a feeling my drought of not seeing deer is going to end on Saturday morning!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm about to clock out in 3 minutes and I won't be clocking back in until the 15th of November. Tomorrow will be finalizing all the loading and getting stuff ready. I'll be leaving early Saturday morning for Missouri and I'll be in a tree by early afternoon. I am so ready for this.
