Well here it is opening morning had two does 30 yards out at first shooting hours I've seen about 30 squirrels and just found out I have a raccoon in the tree above me and just got a few trail cam pictures sent to me from the camera at the stand I'm hunting this evening and it had the buck I've been watching on camera from the stand I'm in this morning going by it at first shooting light I can tell how today is going to go

    Stuff happens.

Just make sure you play the wind. If it's not right for the afternoon, moving may leave more scent around the other strand and then you may see that buck less and less.

I chose this stand for the way the wind was blowing this morning as it's blowing my scent right back out of the woods the way I came in knowing I wouldn't hurt anything walking down the land the farmer has been using all week while cutting beans then went only 5 yards into the woods and the one I plan on using this evening the wind will blow my scent away from a late planted bean field

I got back out to the stand about 2pm this afternoon went to the stand I was planning on Hunting and the wind was perfect they were cutting beans the the east and to the north of the woods I got up in the stand started pulling my range finder release and wind speed thing out of my bag looked up and there was a doe standing broad side at 30 yards from me by the time I got my release on and my bow ready to draw back she went walking off into the woods north west of me once the beans on the east got out I had 3 does 60 yards out from me right on the edge of the field grazing and had the buck I've been after back behind me at 25 yards eating standing beans but no clear shot I'll be working on shooting lanes one night this week before this big rain hits. I had the opportunity to watch two bucks fighting 72 yards north of me I ended up seeing 4 different bucks this evening and a total of 13 does I might not have got anything today but I got a lot of good scouting information today and I talked to the farmer and he's going to be cutting beans for me on Saturday around 11 if the rain holds off so hopefully that will help get some deer moving

I got out tonight and had several doe and small buck encounters the last hour of light. Then a big dandy buck came in behind the others and I shot just under him!I am not exactly sure what happened because everything felt good. Think I may have judged the yardage just slightly off. He was about 35 yards. Hopefully can sleep tonight. Maybe I can get another shot at him. That’s bowhunting sometimes.

Happy Monday morning everyone! Hope everyone had a great weekend. UnFortunately I won't be able to hit the woods again until Friday morning. I should be able to do a Friday morning Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon hunt this weekend. I Kinda feel like I'm on to them now. I know they are using the bedding area that they have always used. There is another hunter in the area. He was there on Saturday and his son was being blown right into the bedding area, and one of their major travel Runs. They caught his scent, and started blowing.

I thought they somehow saw me, on the ground. But I knew there is no way possible that could've happened. I waited an extra 20 minutes after legal shooting light to leave the woods. I walked in the general direction where I heard the does blow. The area I was in is on top of a small ridge. I walked down the ridge, and saw thumbtacks in the trees. I turned around to see if they went up the ridge, they didn't. I turn back around to where I saw thumbtack, and then I saw a street tree with about 20 thumbtacks in it making a big X. At the base of the tree was a summit Viper. I walked over to it and put my hand on the seat cushion, and it was still warm. I didn't think to look to see if the guy had a trail cam set out though, hopefully I'm not on his camera! LOL

This could be kind of a good thing. Because if it does winded him, they're not gonna use that run anymore which will bring them closer to the area I was in, which was upwind of the predominant wind.

Contemplating an all day sit on Friday... or going in mid morning for the rest of the day. According to the solunar chart, mid day activity with the full moon.

Unless you're getting one hell of a cold front in RI or getting a lot of mid day movement from the deer you're after, I'd avoid an all day sit. Save it for couple more weeks.

Went out Sunday afternoon for an opening day sit. Had a perfectly consistent SSE wind, which played nicely for this stand. Only saw a doe and fawn and elected to pass on the doe. It's suppose to be 82 today and I wouldn't be able to butcher her until tonight so I'll wait for some cooler temps to take a doe. The buck I'm after in this spot hasn't showed up on my camera in 3 weeks so I'm hoping he's been up in the woods munching on acorns.

Sorry I've been neglecting the team thread guys. It was an eventful hunt this time. I ended up taking a big old doe, but also ended up losing the Streamlight flashlight that the nurse managers I work for here at St. Jude gave me. I wasn't planning on going back to Kentucky this weekend but I will now. I have to try to find it. I'll most likely be at either the base of one of three trees or in one of four places I parked. It had to have come off my fanny pack strap when I was taking it off.

Anyway, I might even take a few hours of vacation and scramble up there to hunt Friday morning also. Friday should be a good day. I love morning sits when the moon is full. It's going to warm back up though.

Sounds like your freezer is filling up.

Yes it is, and here I am planning on heading back in three days when I still have a big doe in the fridge that needs to be processed.

We use A LOT of ground venison, so I like to try to put at least five deer in the freezer. I prefer six to eight.

We (my wife and I) ground everything off the last doe I took but the backstraps and tenderloins. I plan on doing the same with this one, and when we do it this way it goes very quickly.

Another thing we do is pile up all of the fat and stuff that we trim off, grind it separately, package it and freeze it too. Once in a while my wife will pull out a package of that, brown it in a skillet and our dogs get a real treat.

Related and something I want to try is dehydrating the deer liver as treats for the dogs.

Good luck on finding the light too.

That's not a bad idea, but I think I would wait to try it when the temps are cooler and I'm not so pushed for time after the shot.

On another note, I looked at the scorecard and we are currently in third place, but looking at some of the kills in the other team threads, we won't be for long.

Hey Joe, you sure you don't want to buy a MO tag and go hunt with us in November? :)

I want to so bad!!!! I couldn't fall asleep last night because i was reliving every moment of my Midwest hunts!
If my wife and I were in a better financial situation I would be there in a heartbeat! It's going to be a rough few years with me in school, but once it's over........I told her the first two weeks in November for the rest of our lives will be spent in the Midwest!!!!

I am heading out Wednesday after work until Saturday. Cooler temps are in the forecast so hopefully the deer will be moving.
