My opening day is finally in the 10 day forecast. Going to check my cameras this weekend and come up with a game plan for Oct 1st. So far the only buck on my radar is a big old 7 point that I have 3 years of history with. Would like to hold out and see if any of the bigger bucks show up as October gets closer, though. I'm sure I'll have a bunch of pictures of the old 7 point out of velvet when I check my camera and will share with you guys the 3 year progression of this buck. He's nothing special, but it's still cool to watch a buck grow through the years.
I'll give you a taste of how epic a day it was...this is how it ended (see below). It was a great pleasure to assist Matt (bz_711) in harvesting this beast. I'll do a write up in a few days in a separate thread.
"Epic" sounds like the right word! Looking forward to it. On a side note, at the risk of sounding like a wuss there has always been something that creeped me out about a head without skin on it. I've gutted and processed more animals than I can count over the years, but a head without the skin just plain grosses me out for some reason.
What is it about a season opener that is so exciting? Tomorrow is opening day here in my "temporary" home state of Tennessee. It's supposed to be a warm, humid 70 degrees tomorrow at 6:00 am and the wind is supposed to be out of the east, the next to the worst possible direction for where I'm going to sit (the worst would be a north wind) and my app says deer movement will be at a minimum. Still, I'm excited about climbing that tree in 11 hours and being there even though the chances are slim that I will even see a deer.
Wuss (I'm kidding). On the practical side, when you're looking at an animal that weighs close to half a ton, where even 4 wheelers can't go, every pound matters. He was about 3/4 mile and 600 ft vertical ft above where we could get the 4 wd truck...around 11000ft elevation. Matt and I made 2 trips to pack out the meat, his Dad one trip and his friend took a huge load in one trip. I estimate close to 350-400lbs of meat and skull were packed out on our backs. Besides it will be a euro mount and skinning the skull is just the first step.
Spot on! Makes you feel like a child at Christmas. Good luck Smitty! I probably won't get back in the stand till next Saturday too.
Didn't see anything tonight, but it was an enjoyable hunt! Still hunted for a few hours, found a great looking area and setup on a rock against a tree. My ass is still numb!! Heading out in the morning for a few hours. Good luck everyone! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Got my recurve crossbow in on Friday. I put it together yesterday afternoon, and got it sighted in. It's nice and compact and weights just under five pounds. I wouldn't shoot at anything over 20 yards with it, but all my ground setups will be under 15 yards. Ordered my ghille suit today. Going to dig a hole and bury it in mud and leaves and pine branches for a few days to break it in. Sold my game plan gear treestand transport system on eBay.....auctioned it and it went for $150.00!!!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Killed a small 7 point Saturday morning. Used my new crossbow. I've been a bow hunter for the last 30 years. I'm 58 and was on the receiving end of a stroke a few years ago. Lost my vision in the right eye. I miss shooting my Bowtech Invasion. But, a hunters got to do what a hunters got to do! I'm still in the woods Sent from my LG-E980 using Tapatalk
Yup, yesterday morning. It was quite an ordeal getting him out. I park at a railroad cross roads. Hike 600 yards down the side of the tracks. Had a buddy of mine help me haul him out in a cooler. Had to take some selfies with my phone. Just to darn hot to wait. Sent from my LG-E980 using Tapatalk

Score doesn't matter. If you're happy we're happy. Just don't forget to put two pics in the scorecard thread!!!
Congrats brother!!! Post that bad boy on the score card!! Sorry to hear of the stroke. Glad to see your not letting it get the best of you! I'm a stroke survivor as well. March 23, 2016. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
