Well guys, it’s not a bow kill but my son shot his first buck yesterday evening and it was a dandy! It was an awesome hunt and a day that he and I will never forget. My trail cam was showing a lot of action yesterday morning, had 3 different bucks from 6:30am to 2:30pm so I had a good feeling that there might be a hot doe in the area. I decided to take off work early to run home, get my boy and get out there. I knew there were probably deer in the vicinity so we very slowly and quietly made our way into the timber and to the ground blind I had set up about 40 yds off of the main trail. Not 10 minutes after we sat down I caught deer movement about 100 yds away from us thru some thick timber cover. I caught a glimpse of big antlers and then we witnessed two good bucks fight for a good 5 min. We couldn’t really make out the antler size of both bucks due to the cover and them crashing and fighting like crazy. After the fight ended, the deer seemed to move off away from us so we just sat back and I was explaining to my son how rare it is to witness bucks fighting like that in person. Only the 2nd time I’ve seen it and I had never seen it that close! About 20 min later a doe and her yearling doe came walking in from the same direction the other deer went. Another couple of minutes and another doe starts coming down the trail acting like she might have caught a bit of our wind. Thankfully she kept coming and about 20 yds behind her was this buck. I had Kaden set up on the tripod with the .270 ready to go. The buck came right in and stopped broadside at 40 yds to give us a great shot. Kaden took his time as I was talking him thru it and telling him where to aim. He squeezed off the shot, the buck took off and i watched him go down about 80 yds from the point of impact. I managed to keep him in the blind for about 15 min until he couldn’t stand it any more. Lol We got him home to show mom and little brother, caped out and taken to the taxidermist. Got him skinned, cut up, & meat on ice at about midnight. It was just an awesome hunt and I’m so thankful that we both got to experience it together. Only bad thing other than the taxidermy bill I’m gonna have to eat is the fact that he may be ruined now after killing a deer like this for his first! Lol
