Heading out in the morning, hoping to let an arrow fly. After hunt I have some work to do on to get ready for 6 day deer camp next weekend...have to fix a washout on our Gator trail that allows us to drive gator to back of property to get deer, and cut some firewood for cabin. Still have two stands I wanted to move, but not sure there's time...

Hoping the team puts some points on the board tomorrow

Well guys action has been slow. I did miss a doe last night. 3 does came in and 2 ware really skiddish so I couldn't get stood up. I had to shoot sitting down which I do practice doing. When I drew the alert does jumped causing the one I was going to shoot to spook a bit, so I had to turn a few inches more to my right to shoot her. I didn't realize my cam was hitting my knee until I released and the cam smacked my leg. The arrow went 6''-8'' below her at 18 yards. After a few minutes she came back in but didn't give me shot. I did laugh after she went away. Having my coffee and getting ready to go again this morning. Still have 7 days of my vacation left.

Also, on one farm i've been hunting I have only been able to hunt one side of the road which is 80-100 acres. I talked to my buddy yesterday that owns it and now can hunt the other side. So I can hunt the whole 280 acres. His inlaws were hunting there but they aren't now so I get to.

Sat yesterday from 9am to close on a piece of public land that borders trophy managed land and the place usually rocks during the rut but didn't see a single deer yesterday! It did look like the squirrel rut was going on because they were everywhere and really chasing :)

Well heading out the next 2 days. Looking really windy and a little rainy tomorrow. Will probably try and stay out of the woods and set up on field edges where trails come out and hope for the best. I hate being in the woods when its windy. At the private land a tornado went over a couple years ago and theres still a lot of tree tops barely hanging on. Windy days bring them down. Tuesday is looking a little better. I think the chances for rain are a little higher but the winds supposed to be pretty subdued when compared to Monday.

Wednesday I'm going to help my friend stick up a stand in a different place on the corp ground. He's been hunting a lot out of the 2 stands we hung a few weeks ago and just really hasn't seen anything and is pretty discouraged. We are going to go in a bit deeper than we already are and see if we can get him on something. I'll probably solely be on private for possibly the rest of the season.

After these two days I go back to work for 3 days then I have the 9th-12th off.

Well hell. I just don't know what to do. Was looking at the weather again and tomorrow they are saying intermittent rain. 25-40 MPH winds out of the south and getting into the 60s. Tuesday the winds calm down to 10-15 but they are saying 1.5-2" of rain and high 50s. I just don't know if its worth dealing with that weather. I know things should be starting to heat up but with that kind of weather are the deer even going to want to move even though the ruts a week away. Need some wisdom or encouragement here.

Ok. Sorry for the three consecutive posts but I just had one of the coolest things happen. I walked out on the porch and saw three deer standing in the field. 2 Does with a descent 6 point chasing them. I ran inside grabbed my bow and ran into the cedar thick. I came out the other side behind some hay bales and started bleating. The does came running right at me. They turned at about 25 yards and I yelled. They stopped looking confused. I went to draw and guess what. I left my damn release in the house!!! The buck never even cared I was there. He just was all over the does. I ran back in grabbed my release ran back out the same route. They were still in the field chasing. I bleated and grunted several times but they didn't ever come back by at a reasonable distance. They eventually ran over the horizon. Buck still on them when they when out of sight. It was freaking awesome. I'm going hunting in the morning by the way. LOL.

Ditto - no deer sighted yesterday except in the headlights pulling in. And I had the same thoughts - Squirrel rut was in full force:)
    Better luck next time...

Did a little rattling right at first light. Had a pretty good looking 10 come investigate. But he circled way out around me and got downwind. Never spooked but got skittish and just kind of walked off through the woods. He was headed towards my dad so hopefully he gets a poke at him.

Sometimes you just have to talk it out loud...or see rutting activity outside your house - great story! That is one reason I have an identical release in my backpack - as it's too easy to climb up in a stand and my release is in a different pair of pants if the weather changed. Of course - in your case - not sure you'd have been looking for backpack either.

I have one of those tree umbrellas for rainy days - like $18 at Walmart years ago, it actually works great. Wraps around tree and you can stand against tree and stay dry. Unless it hard downpour, rut movement will keep up in the rain. GOOD LUCK!

Sounds like good things are happening for Team 9 to start the week off. I'm having cell phone problems, as in the speakers have quit on my phone again. Luckily, I can still hear phone calls. Maybe its a sign that I'll be offered that position that I interviewed for last week.

This weekend was quiet for me. I enjoyed a couple of days off, did some reading (Brad Thor is quickly becoming one of my favorites), took the kids to the football games, trick or treating and the birthday party. Yesterday we dedicated our boys at church and had the biggest group of high school kids at the youth group.

Hopefully we'll see some "big buck down" posts coming up!

Moved into one of my dad's ground blind around 1130. Going to hang out here till 3 or so. Winds supposed to seeing north and I'll move back up on top off the hill when that happens. Squirrels are going crazy. I'm having a terrible time staying awake.

I did find 2 good stand locations and got them hung. 1 is on the corn of the neighbors clear cut and a rye field. The clear cut land is open forrest management land so it's open to the public. The other is up on a bench on a point off a big ridge and that goes down to another bench (another good looking spot) which then goes to a saddle ( can see my buddies back yard from the saddle). On both sides of the benches are valleys with briar patches and thickets. I have pics of my target buck about 20 yards from my stand on that bench already!
