Great elk! That is something I've ALWAYS wanted to do. Especially while camping. I think that would be the greatest experience ever.

As for me, I saw nothing but a set of eyes on my walk into my stand this morning. I'm getting ready to head back out to a different property, which is the one holding that big 8-pointer that I'm after.

I'm up in the tree. The battery died in my digital camera so I can't even look at my trail cam pics.

Swamp & Chris - good luck this week!

Chris - if you ever want more info on making an Elk hunt happen - let me know. I logged onto bowhunting.com for the first time in 2009 just to post a question on "Best Over the Counter Elk Hunt" as I wanted to find some info out. Got some great responses, but also got an invite to a large camp from a past poster on this site. Met up with some others from here on BH.com and had a fantastic hunt and learned the ropes...it surprisingly easy to do, buy tags at a Walmart, pitch a tent, pack some food, and hit the woods. Now bagging one is a little harder...but I've had opportunities 3 of 4 years I went - just finally all came together this season. Regardless - a week in the Rockies with buddies is hard to beat for a hunting camp...but many warned me - it is highly addicting, and I agree...

I would love to do it. That sounds like its right up my alley. I'm definitely going to look into it for next year. I'm on the east coast so I might have to fly. I'm not sure how I'd get all my meat back and everything. I'd assume its expensive.

I know an elk hunt is on my bucket list, but not for a couple of years. Just a question, what's on your bowhunting bucket list? Mine is mule deer, antelope, elk, bighorn sheep, coyote, jack rabbit from 40+ yards, coyote from less then 20 yards, chukar, grouse, and bow fishing.

Glad to hear that you saw something. Too bad on not getting a shot.

On my bucket list is a non-typical whitetail, elk, moose, and bear. All with a bow, along with an Arkansas duck hunt with a shotgun.

Back at it again this afternoon. I slept in this morning. My buddy ("Don't Poke the Bear" on this forum) shot his first doe with a bow last night so we had a late night dragging and hanging and today we had to skin and quarter. I saw a lot of activity last night I was just in too thick if cover to get a shot...or even distinguish between buck and doe. My plan was to go back to where I saw them exiting the thicket tonight but the wind just isn't right.

Today I'm sitting where I shot a 110" 8-pointer last season and a spike the year before that. This is one of my favorite spots. I've got a hayfield with lots of clover behind me and an overgrown pasture which is now about 3' of growth. I have the blind along a stone wall dividing the two.

In this picture you can see the cedar tree where my stand is. I would normally hunt here but the wind isn't right. I'm expecting the bucks to come from the right in this picture. There has been a doe in the field all summer but she comes from the North about 150 yards up and feeds in the field.

Here is the field where I expect the does to come from.

Well I didn't connect but I had an opportunity to. Right at sunset I hear a bit of rustling and up pops an antlerless head about 15 yards away between myself and that cedar tree. A deer had been bedded there the whole time. After coming up within 5 yards of the blind I concluded that this deer was FAR too small to shoot. It didn't have spots but it couldn't have been more than 3 months old. My parent's black lab probably weighed more than this thing. So I let it walk...and left the blind...and now I'm home.

Went out to my newest property this morning. I saw 5 does but the wind wasn't quite right, as I'm still learning this property. A lot of action right at 6:30ish. I kept getting winded though. I predicted the deer would enter this particular field via a main trail when, in fact, they entered by an alternate route which was downwind of me. Got winded twice. No snorts but they took off in a hurry when they caught my scent. My hunt was abruptly ended when I was blindsided with some gastrointestinal issues and found myself hanging my can off my tree stand and doing some not-so-tidy forest fertilization. I figure that spot is ruined for a few days and I certainly will be avoiding that tree.
