Stay after it everyone...I am living vicariously through you all! I will be out on Sunday hunting. The young lad I am helping/guiding (he has down syndrome) will hopefully secure his first big game animal with a rifle. I cannot wait! Post often! I love hearing about your adventures!
I saw 8 doe last night. All about 100yards into the CRP. Today sitting a different stand on a small finger of CRP surrounded by timber. Haven’t seen anything. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Last night was an another lesson in “the trail cam doesnt tell the whole story”. Been having some good movement past my trail cam on this ridge top that goes down into bedding. So I sat close by the path on top. With a NW wind my scent should drop into the valley below me and I’d be golden if anything walked in front of me. An hour before last light 2 does and a spike walked up that valley below me. Fortunately the wind forecast was wrong and was blowing out of the East instead. There was a white oak dropping hard down in that valley and they ate under that tree for 30 minutes. About 40 yards away so out of recurve range. So trail cam showed ridge top action, but 40 yards away was a lot more action that it would’ve never captured. Thats why I try not to rely on those things too much. 3 hunts for myself and all 3 I’ve been in the game.
Another mission accomplished. Cameron Cassily made a perfect shot on his very first big game species. Giving back to the hunting community is the best gift this hunter has ever experienced, especially when the special people like Cameron put so much time and effort into being successful. He and I will be chasing after his bull elk in a few weeks. I know he'll start that hunt with a very positive attitude. The Tennessee and Minnesota Non-Resident deer tags have been purchased...
Yall see the dead head entered in the contest. The guy is saying a late recovery. I sorry but I have never seen a dead head that clean out in the elements after a month or two? I just was wondering ya’lls thoughts.
Yeah it's legit. Holt is a straight up dude. He posted about tweets ago when he shot it. He looked for a couple of days but didn't find it. He posted the other day that he knew where the deer bedded. He went back there and there it was. He is seriously an awesome hunter with most of his kills, including this one, coming on public ground Sent from my SM-N975U1 using Tapatalk
It’s not a dead head. It’s the entire skeleton with hide and fur. He has vultures, eagles and coyotes there. I could easily see a carcass getting stripped in three weeks. He posted three weeks ago that he had shot a 130-ish buck and he’s been looking for it since then. The fact that he found it with his arrow in the bones solidifies the fact that it’s legit. Also, he tagged it to make it legitimate. As Jim said above, Holt is a good guy and I’m sure that is the buck he killed. If he hadn’t posted repeatedly about the buck he shot or if he had just posted pics of the head I wouldn’t have counted it.
Sorry I haven't been too active y'all. Truth be told, I'm going through a bout of depression for the past 6 months or so. On top of that, my wife and I are a month into a new lifestyle as empty nesters with our son in Tennessee. She has become so damn clingy! It's thrown me for a loop because for the past 18 years, she was always the complete opposite, making my life much easier. Now, we are trying to figure out, A. do we even know each other anymore? B. Do we even like/love each other anymore? C. Do we want to continue and build a new life together? Hunting has been in my mind, but first things first. I felt the cold air last night out walking the dog, the smells, and felt the primal desire screaming at me to get in the woods. I also had a dream I was hunting last night, so the time is drawing near for me! I'll be in the woods within the next few weeks. Who knows, maybe by staying out of the woods until the good stuff, will actually benefit me?!!
Best of luck to everyone hunting this weekend. Remember to have fun!!!!! I am in the October lull. I am taking Cameron (the young lad who shot the pronghorn) on the 26th for a go at elk, and then I am off to Minnesota for Whitetail on Nov. 6th. I have all fingers crossed for a successful hunt there. On the 25th on November, I embark for Cookeville, Tennessee. If successful early, I will step across the border into Georgia for more tree fun.
Good luck this weekend. This guy is definitely nocturnal. Hopefully once the corn in the next field is shelled, he’ll change his habits. Also, first cat I’ve ever got on camera. Didn’t know we had them on the farm.
