Shot my bow some yesterday. After putting the little man to bed I sharpened and stropped my broadheads. Each one is popping hairs at this point. Just a couple more weeks. If anyone is looking for a really nice sharpening stone kit, check out Ranch Fairy's kit. Link below. Worth the cash IMO. https://siriusoutdoorgroup.com/product/best-diamond-sharpening-set-ever-rf/ Doing a 3D shoot tomorrow with my buddy. Can't wait to get out.
3D shoot did not go well. 19 targets in I shot my bow not realizing I didn’t nock an arrow. Off to the archery shop. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Not at all. First time ever done that. Notproud of it. Crazy how easy it is to do. Took it to the shop. String and cable will be ordered Monday. He said it should be ready in a week to a week and a half. $180 I didn’t plan on spending. Wife isn’t happy with me. Other than that I’m not going to be able to continue shooting before season. Productive morning. Started at my new property and checked the white oaks. One big tree next to standing corn was dropping good and had 2 rubs and a scrape nearby. Definitely a spot I want to hunt opening week. Second spot I stopped at I changed SD card and hung a set of sticks. One nice buck (pic below) back in early Sept but mostly small bucks and does. It’s an awesome travel route and I expect it to get hot in later October like it normally does. I hung a set of sticks near heavy intersection and I’ll stay out of there until the scrapes start popping. Last spot I went to just hasn’t had much activity on camera so I decided to pull it and move it. SD card showed some does but not much buck activity yet. The odd thing was I got a video of a bobcat pooping in my mock scrape. Anyone ever seen that before?
What’s everyone gameplan going into the next couple of weeks of hunting? I’m headed out Saturday AM. Just gonna try a new spot and see what happens. Weather isnt ideal. Saturday PM my 8 year old daughter and I will be in a blind trying to get her a deer.
Our season starts Tuesday. I’ll get in a couple days and then back off until the weather cools down. May put a doe down if I see a dry one.
I’m not doing any hunting until the temp drop down here in Louisiana. Probably late November. Kansas trip is 06-16 Nov.
Called the archery shop. String and cable still haven’t delivered from Mathew’s. Hoping they arrive tomorrow. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
As a team, we are still holding our own in First Place. I am off for the final weekend of the Colorado archery season. My carcass has not been hit by a bear. I will more than likely wander about and hope an elk or bears ends up in front of me... Keep after it, Gents!
First goal of the season on opening morning accomplished…daughter got a doe! Had to wait patiently for the one behind her to move and she made an excellent shot with her crossbow. She went 60 yards and piled up! I may head out tonight for my first hunt.
Congrats. How old? I know I have a few years before my boy can go out. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
She’s 8 years old. She shot her first one last year out of a double ladder stand. This doe and a young one came in early. About 7:05. Took about 10 minutes for her to get broadside without the other deer behind her. Made a great shot again. Nice to be drinking some coffee here at 10:30 with a deer skinned and hanging in my garage!
That’s awesome. Sounds like I have 5-6 more years in that case. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
My youngest is 6 and she CAN shoot the crossbow and hit the target. But I don’t think she can aim on her own very well just yet. I also decided that I wanted my kids to be at an age where they could at least appreciate it. I know some start them at 4 and to each their own. I just wanted to make sure they understood what they were doing and make sure they grasp the significance of taking an animal’s life. Travis - SE Ohio Shedding Light Outdoors Matthew 5:16
So, the Colorado bow season is over, and I totally blew it yesterday. At first light, I spied 20 elk (a very nice 6x6 bull, a spike being chased away by the bull, and 18 cows and calves). They were about 550 yards away. Then, I glassed another 13 elk above timberline about a mile away. I decided to have a go at the closer group. However, I had to wait for the herd to stop feeding. They were in a large sage flat with no legitimate cover or approach. I knew they would eventually move back into the trees to bed...it was simply a matter of waiting to make a play. 35 minutes later they predictably started towards the trees, and so did I. When I was within 100 yards of the herd, I pulled my bow from its sling. I noticed the rubber tubing which aligns my peep sight had come untied. In my haste to advance, I failed to notice I had retied the tubing incorrectly. Stupid me retied the rubber around my string instead of behind it. Argh!!!!! I had a cow elk step out from behind a tree at 30 yards. She was perfectly broadside-a chip shot any day of the week! I drew my bow to kill her (I like elk meat and horns really do not matter). Needless to say, I could not see through me peep...I had to let down. I watched the entire herd move away. I was totally frustrated, but even more upset with myself. Dummy me! I had 6 elk hunters with me this year. Every single one had an opportunity to arrow an elk. Bow hunting this amazing species is not easy! Never saw a bear, nor did one ever come to the carcass I left for them.
