Well just got back in! The moring for myself was pretty slow up until about 9:30. Then it was like someone opened the flood gates 40yrds out from me! I had deer going a little bit of everywhere. There was three small bucks(2-4pts and a spike) along with a doe that fed to right underneath of me for 30minutes or so! There were a few deer that skirted deeper into the thicket that I never got a good look at so I am not sure what they were?

I contemplated shooting the doe, but she just wasnt all that big? It was definantely not a button buck as I was looking straight down on her head, but it was of darker color like the more mature deer, but I opted to give her the slip and wait for a bigger one!!

All in all it wasnt a bad morning, I think the total deer count between myself and three otherguys I was hunting with was roughly 34 deer...!!!! I am not sure how many of them were the same deer, but still not bad odds!!

I am still uncertain if I am going to try and brave the heat tonight, but if not I will be back out tommorow morning!! I will update again when I get back out!!

    Later On Gd Luck All!!!

Alright guys I shot a doe this a.m. and took a pic and posted to the General talk, but I only snapped one photo. I didn't know we had to have two photo's, my bad. I'm going to try to kill another one tonight to enter in the contest. I have two photo's but they are in the same position, wonder if that will work?

This elk hunt turned into a joke rather quickly the last 2 days. We went from seeing elk, bugling in elk to just bugling in hunters. 8 of them in the last 2 days we are just about to give up. If I call in 1 more hunter we are going to pack up and go home.

I took lots of pics and will do the full story when I get back. Can't wait for whitetails. I'm going to shoot the first thing that offers a shot.

Well update number 2 for my season..I DIDNT KILL ANYTHING YET, if you didnt feel like reading all the below stories...!

I went back out Wednesday morning for a few hours and seen 11-12 deer. It was rather slow until about 830 then I had a small doe fawn come in under me feeding. I checked back and could make out a Doe, two fawns and a small 4point. They eventually worked there way out of sight and I had a spike and a 5point come in and feed under me for about 10 minutes or so. I then had another big doe with two spotted fawns come into about 20yrds for a minute or two and then the deer worked there way back into the thickets! It was a good morning hunt, although I would have loved to had one of those does come along without the spotted fawns!!!

    Friday Morning:
BORING BORING BORING!! I managed to sit it out til 1030 only to see a squirrel all morning!!

    Saturday Morning(today):
I had a big doe come in at 730 all by her lonesome, this is what I have been basically waiting for! She managed to sneak into 15yrds before I even noticed her!! I managed to get stood and the bow drawn back, but she never gave me a "good" shot! It just wasnt meant to be, she slowly worked her way away never giving me a shot that I felt confident enough to take! I then had a doe and fawn come in about 800 working there way about 50yrds out past me! The moring slowed up until about 930 when I heard two shots from a .22 crack off from what sounded like maybe 100yrds away. I figured someone squirrel hunting, but then I had a small spotted button buck come in 5 minutes after the shot under my stand and he just kept staring back for about 10-15 minutes like he was expecting more deer to follow but they never did? The goofy thing was the button buck walked back towards where he came from?? This got my curiosity going thinking maybe whomever it was shot at a deer instead of a squirrel?? I had to get down to check it out, but never seen nobody? I walked through the woods for a little ways just looking for hunter orange but none ever stood out, so I dont know what was up with all that????

I will be back out this evening, so hopefully I wil ahve an update for ya'll!!!!!!

The 2009 Colorado elk hunt started Sunday September 13th about noon. Jason and I left Merrilian,WI with plans of driving straight through and start hunting Monday morning. Our drive was interrupted by the Nebraska POPO. $128.00 dollars later we are back on the way. We made it to our spot in time to hunt the morning. After an exhausting climb to the top of the mountain we waited for daylight. All our effort to get there by dawn with high hopes of getting to a pinch point funnel where the elk feed up through on there way to bed were crushed by some hunters camping in the meadow the elk feed in.

Day 1 ended on a high note as we were on our way out we spotted 2 bulls and a couple of cows on the opposite hillside. To late to make a stalk we made a plan for the morning. Day 2 started with a hike up this steep knarly ridge. We ran into elk about ¾ of the way up. The elk were about 80 yards out. 1 bull and 4 cows which would not respond to any calls.

Day 3 We decided to go back to where we went the first day but hunt a little farther away. After an uneventful morning we sat at the top of the mountain and ate some lunch. I decided to let a couple of bugles. 10 minutes went by with no answer, then it happened. We heard a branch break the another branch break. We got set up as fast as we could but the bull was at 20 yards and looking right at us. Good thing Jason had his bow ready, as he came to full draw the bull whirled and started to run. I let out a cow call to get him to stop but as he slowed down Jason’s finger bumped his release resulting in premature arrow release.

We caught back up to the bull about an hour later. We got with in 50 yards of him but he did not offer any shot before he took off for good. By mid afternoon we had about as much excitement as we could handle for 1 day and started our trek out. We made it about 400 yards before we heard another elk bugle. We got set up with the decoy I bought from Justin and I started calling. With in minutes I had two bulls screaming at me and closing the distance. They both came in to 35 yards not offer any shot. 1 was a small 5x5 and the other was 300+” 6x6. They didn’t see what they were looking for and took off. Just spent from all the activity we decided to let the area cool off for the rest of the day and hit it again in the morning.

Day 4 came with high hopes of screaming bulls looking for a fight. After setting up and starting to call we got an answer. 30 minutes of bugling back and forth resulted in caling in 5 other hunters. After that we went out and got liquored up.

Day 5 Slept in, went and did some shopping, then headed up to try again. It was getting late when we heard a bugle of in the distance but we figured we would try. We got set up again. After calling and calling the bull sounded close and was coming in hot. I was thrashing trees and doing my best to sound like a herd of elk. The bugle’s got just out of sight when all of a sudden I see a human face, make it 3 human faces. We all had a good laugh and hiked out.

Day 6 was met with low expectations but we have to make the best of what we got. In the morning we saw a cow and a small bull come over the ridge top and bed down. We believe that they do that almost everyday so we have a plan for the morning of day 7. We came up with a plan for the afternoon hunt of day 6 and started our climb back up. We got with in 200 yards of the top of the mountain when I decided to bugle. We got an answer right away. We ran to get set up for a shot but the bull ran straight in and was standing at 12 yards. Jason knocked an arrow and drew his bow again the bull turned but this time Jason got a good shot off. The arrow flight was true but his aim wasn’t. 1-Aspen tree shot.

On our way out we found some bone the only bone we would bring home. A 5x4 Elk and a 4x4 Muley.

We had a good time and saw some great scenery. We also found a grave. Weird

Shot this 334 lb bear on 1st night of WI bear hunt. Skull scores 19 1/8 with skin on, told it should net about 18 1/2 after drying. beautiful white V also. Good start to the season! Time to start whacking some whitetails.
