It’s always fun sitting with the old man. I hope y’all have a good season together. My dad was in a stand with me last year when he killed his first whitetail in 18 years. (He moved to Colorado in 01 and only hunts elk and mule deer now). It was a blast to watch him stick one.

What’s everybody’s portable climbing sticks of choice? I’m in the market for a set and looking for the pros/cons.

I use hawk heliums. I love them. Seem to bite way better than lonewolf and the steps on both sides of the stick is a must in my opinion. $100 for three. They're a tad heavier but worth it in my opinion. If I went to anything else itd be beast sticks. And I just can't afford it lol

I'm sure you'll love it. Haven't heard a bad thing about lonewolf. I have a xop vanish just for cost reasons and love it. Practically the same though. Their leveling system is absolutely awesome. Lonewolf and xop both allow you to hubt just about any tree. The straps kinda limit you to smaller trees. But I dont usually have big trees anyway.

    Kyle,

I think I’m gonna nite the bullet and purchase the lone wolf alpha/sticks package. What’s your method of getting the sticks/stand up the tree as you climb up? Do you just tie them off to a pull up rope and have the stand on your back? I’ve used preset lock ons and climbing stands my entire hunting life, but I really like the mobility options and being able to get into mostly any tree.

I go up in one big whack lol but I make paracord loops on the side of my harness and slide the feet of the sticks into them and twist. They hang off my side. I run three sticks but if I ran four id put the first two on then come back down and put the other two in my loops. My stand is on my back along with a rope tied to my bow and a rope to my pack tied to the end of my platform. Hope that gives you an idea man.

I don’t know how you guys do that hang and hunt stuff. I have a lone wolf and sticks and I hate hanging and taking that thing down. I’ve got to where I buy those 20 foot stick sections and hang up 8-10 sets on public then just carry my stand in and use those that are preset.

I'm not gonna lie and say its not hard work hahaha but I do it because I am always moving. Whether its different areas on the same piece or another 10 miles down the road. Sometimes I go in and don't even set up my stand. Sit right on the ground. Which is how i killed a buck 5 years ago on public land. Found good sign, no trees to hang, and sat up against a log lol

I've got an XOP stand and sticks that I actually let up over the summer in an elm tree in a creek bottom. I tend not to run and gun too much here as I'm on private property and the choices of trees in central Texas are kind of limited. If you can even find a tree tall enough with enough girth to mount a tree stand in you're doing well. A lot of guys hunt from tripods or elevated blinds in the scrub oaks and mesquite.

My main stand is actually a cheap XL Sportsman's Guide hang on that weighs a ton. It's up there and it's not coming down! I just put a new set of straps on it every other year and cut off the old ones so it's not growing into the tree.

I use a lifeline and a rock climbing harness with an ~8' tether to the lifeline rather than a hunting harness. It's a lot more comfortable to sit with, shoot with ... and to hang with if you have that happen.

Also picked this up last week to mow some trails in my hunting areas.

    Swisher.jpg

The motor is blown so I got it for a song. Picking up a riding mower tomorrow with a good motor and a lot of other problems ... also for a song. I should have a working 44" Swisher trail mower for less than $200 by the end of the day tomorrow.

I live my sportsman guide stands. They’re super heavy but they’re huge and way more comfy than my lone wolf.
