Hitting the woods this morning for a gun doe. Brother in law is going with me. He’s down bad from missing a decent buck last weekend. Hopefully we can get him on a buck.

I’ve made two trail run, small batches of jerky, trying to come up with a Caribbean Jerk recipe. It hasn’t worked out. I may try doing a store bought bag of hot seasoning, get it about half dehydrated, baste it with Buffalo Wild Wings Caribbean jerk sauce, and then throw it on the smoker to finish

Been on some deer yesterday and today in northern ohio. Nice buck at 25 yards last night. But some does caught my wind and took him away. I’ve moved up into the heart of the movement I saw this morning. Getting stick bow close without using corn is tricky.
Hopefully some action here shortly… [IMG]

Doe Down! I was just about to pack up this morning and call it quits whenever two small fawns came in and bedded within 60 yards of me. So I waited and got the cameras back out and 10 minutes later 4 more does worked their way in tight. This lead doe came to the base of my sticks, looked up and then started to walk away and didn’t see me draw. Smashed her at 5 yards and she went about 100 yards and crashed. Feels awesome to get stick bow close without having to use bait. That’s my third deer with the long bow.

I brought the bow out this afternoon. Hunting behind my house where I killed the 10 pt with my rifle. There is a good-looking 11 pt that I would be more than happy to take, but I won't pass up a fat doe. Because of the government shutdown, I was paid furlough pay for the majority of my vacation. I have 57 hours to use or lose before the end of the year. I will be taking the week before Christmas off. I plan on lots of stand time!

I'm headed back up to public land to hunt this morning. It's the opening day of gun season in Ohio, but I'm taking the recurve with me. Haven't really gun hunted in four or five years, and just can't really get excited about it anymore. It's 32 degrees, and the Orange Army should have some deer moving around, as long as nobody's in my spot. Had to put the kids on the bus, so I'll be getting there at daylight.

Took my little guy out on Friday before the storm. He elected to pass on a couple of does and small bucks - said he wanted to hold out for something with at least 6 points. We had a lone doe come in at last light, and he wanted to shoot her, but she wouldn't give us the right angle. When she finally turned, it was just a little too dark for me to feel comfortable with the shot, so I called him off. He was not happy. lol

I went out last night and trudged through a foot of fresh snow to get into my stand. Ended up seeing 12 deer including both of the shooters I was looking for. The first was coming in on a string but two does that were hanging around my stand got nervous and blew the whole hunt. The other came in right after dark as I was packing up.

Still trying to decide what I'm going to do this weekend. Little man wants to go hunting so I'll probably get him a firearms tag and go sit on our corn field again. If I don't shoot another deer I'll be fine. I'd like to get him one before the season ends.

Do we have anyone doing some late season bow hunting? I wish I could! Rifle season ended this past weekend and since my cameras have been blowing up. Have new bucks that I have never seen before. Could be second estrous or just new bucks.

There’s some potential for me. Getting to that time of year I focus on killing honkers though. [IMG]

I’m planning my next move. Maybe have a couple more swings before it’s all over. Don’t have high hopes for a slammer buck but hope to get some antler somehow.

I’m pretty well done I think. I’m going do do some late seasons scouting in Missouri and if I jump a giant maybe I’ll buy a tag.

I'm still grinding it out, looking for an IL buck as well, although it will only count for 50 points if I get one. Going to head out this afternoon and possibly tomorrow as well. Just have to stop and buy a firearms tag on my way out.

I’ll be in the stand in the morning. Selling and buying a house and then starting a renovation has took up all my time. About 20 day from our rut. Gun season started the week before thanksgiving and goes until February 10. Still plenty of season left.

Headed back to that public pierce one more time tomorrow AM. Gun season just wrapped up and I can get there early. Had deer move by just about every time I’ve been there. Hoping for a buck but will shoot whatever gives me the shot.

I had one of the best weekends of hunting I've had in a long time. Late season + snow + standing corn = lots of deer! I saw a dozen or more on Friday night and could have shot a lot of them, just no big bucks in the group. Saturday morning, I went out to check my blind and make sure it was still huntable, and sat in there until noon. I saw probably 10 deer, all does and one small buck. That afternoon I went back to my stand on the other side of the farm and saw 20+ deer including one of the shooters I'm after, but he's the smartest/luckiest deer I've ever hunted and somehow busted me again. I had a dozen does and fawns within 30 yards for over an hour and never got busted. He comes behind me as I'm watching another buck and either caught me moving or got a small whiff of me. Either way, it was game over after that.

Looking at heading back out this week one night and possibly this weekend. I want to get my little guy out, but it's going to be single digits and even with the heater in the blind I think it may be a little much for him. We'll see what the weatherman says as it gets closer.

Is it possible the buck just knows that setup is there?

I'm still hunting. I will be on vacation next week, and I'll do my best to get us some more points.

Well he does now. I've been busted by the same deer out of 3 different setups now. I'm cursed! Cursed, I say!

Looking like I'm going to head back on Thursday for another go at him. Depending on how that goes we'll see if I'm feeling manly enough to brave a few hours of single digit temps on Sunday afternoon.
