I look for pinch points or funnels such as holes in fences, inside corners of fields, ridges or creek crossings like the one you mentioned. Try to avoid areas where the deer can sort of wander any which way they want. Look for converging trails of 2 or more runways coming together.
This is how the Killzones I picked up are. Rear deploying and no o-rings. I have heard they are similar to the rage but I have never shot rage. They claim they took the spitfire max and just made some improvements to it as well. I wanted to try them because I heard they fly so great and like I said previously, I found they flew better than my field tips. I tried the Bloodrunner 2 blade previously and I shot a doe with it and it was devastating ( 4ft wide blood trail and blood on the side of tree trunks she ran by). The reasons I wanted to try something new was I thought I could shoot something that maybe flew a little better and also something that could penetrate better. This is why I am trying the Killzones. So far they fly great and now just need to see how they perform in the field. http://www.newarchery.com/products/1-67/broadheads/killzone.html
FYI - I notified the alternates thread that team 7 was all checked in! They requested that teams still reply if all members check in.
Got a good set hung for this weekend! WI opener baby! My mom's gonna run the video camera. Tryin to get my first kill on video! Hoping for a doe, but if one of the big bucks on cam shows up I won't hesitate to let one fly!
I will try and get a picture up soon. i have an aerial from google earth, but i cant get it small enough to upload it. i copied it to paint, and drew the property lines. i keep trying.
HAHA! success! okay. heres the pic i was able to get... the yellow is the property line, the light blue lines are somewhat known deer paths, or where ive seen them in the past 5 years or so while working, and the red line is the place where theres always tons of deer prints at the river crossing. i saw two does here last year, just didnt get a clear shot. the red line is probably where i will set my tree stand. i was also thinking about building a makeshift ground blind in some downed trees near the are where the two blue lines intercect on the south side of the swamp in the clump of trees to the west.
Brian, you are going to kill some deer on that property. Looks awesome. If you need some help determining stand sites let us know, we can help mark up the map. If you already know the deer movement on the property, then good luck!
So far, I plan on being out there with ya Mitch. Forecast looks decent, mid 40's overnight, 70's during the day, and a new moon. Could be worse! I haven't been to this property since December, so I have no idea what to expect. But the deer haven't been bothered at all. Hunt for a few hours in the morning, fish mid-day, and hunt the last few hours. That's livin large!
Yeah she's a big hunter too and she said she'd do it opening weekend if I let her have the meat from the doe! Can't wait to spend a couple nights of hunting with her & hope to get a good kill on camera!
If anyone hasn't yet I'll post in that forum, been trying to get the most college work I can done so I can have more time off during the season
I posted in the alternates forum yesterday and said we were all checked in and our team number is green so we are good to go!
i will always take any info i can get from anyone willing to help. I just took up deer hunting last year, and this will be my second year bowhunting. i have a lot to learn and i am having a ton of fun learning it. i had a stealth cam that i was using for the past two years, (cheap version) but i always got pics of deer butt's. i have one good pic of an old huge 6 point that looks to be over 5 years old. (big ol gut, thick, thick neck with lots of battle scars.) most of my other butt pics show all the deer movement late at night, early morn. (between 10:00 pm and 4:00 am)
