Funniest was I was peed on by a squirrel. Weirdest one was I was up in the stand and a coyote ran behind me and out of view just as fast. About 10 minutes later that coyote cam sprinting back with an old beer can in his mouth, dropped it at the bottom of my tree and took off again. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
This one has been my most consistent on camera all summer long. I hope he keeps doing this for a few more weeks, and I could have a pretty good chance of killing him. I have a tree that I saddle hunt from not far from this camera. This weekend I got it all trimmed out cut a new access trail from an open field to the tree, then cleared out all leaves, sticks, and debris for a silent entry. If he's around, he's bedding close so I need to be able to sneak in as quietly as possible.
Took a small walk to check a little flat on the edge of a clearcut that I knew the chestnut oaks were on. Immediately saw this super fresh scrape and backed out. I’ve seen bucks use this flat early for years now and have taken a couple Doe off it. Definitely has me excited! In my past experience when I find these scrapes in an area like this it tends to be a mature buck with other bucks in tow. Time will tell. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Looking good!! I moved a few cameras onto trees where scrapes typically show up this time of year, and sure enough, I had bucks on them both last night. It's the most wonderful time of the year.
Heading out this evening to set a stand and check a couple out. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
We may have a buck down....I shot a decent 8. But he was quartering hard away and I hit high above the back hip and angled down into the body cavity, had about 20 inches of penetration but I haven't even went and looked. I just backed out. Praying I didn't just back strap him but I'm guessing guts, liver and maybe one lung. Keep yall updated.
Hell yeah! Goodluck on your track man! Hopefully you caught something good. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Hey fellas! So I got on blood and tracked about 100 yards, got into some thick stuff and backed out. I was finding blood that looked dry and blood that looked fresh, which led my to believe he may still be alive. I reached out to a dog tracker and am waiting to hear back. I did not find my arrow and don't expect to because if the angle of the shot (rear down into body cavity) but I am really hoping that the angle is what I initially susoected. I'm a bit concerned if he's still alive but I really don't know because I stopped the track
Dogs are pretty amazing. Make us look dumb lol hopefully someone contacts you and makes quick work of it! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Ruby, my tracking wirehaired dachshund, was like white on rice when it came to deer that were gut or liver shot. To her credit, Ruby tracked a deer almost 3mi that was shot through the length of the loin, no boiler room penetration. (The hunter had to put a finishing arrow when we finally drove the deer to ground). Yes, dogs have incredible noses!
This is giving me some hope fellas. Tracker should be here in about 15 mins then we gotta drive to the spot, another 15 mins. So we should be tracking within the hour. I hate wounding deer and making a marginal shot, that is the lesson on this regardless of recover - stay composed and if in doubt about the angle, just let it walk. I thought I could thread that needle but with everything going on (adrenaline, the surprise of the deer just trotting in, etc) I evidently made a poor decision. And that's the hard part to admit. Good Lord willing the deer is recovered and not all of it is spoiled.
