Still no deer to report but I’ll explain a hunt I had yesterday because I learned a lot from it. So maybe you guys will too if you didn’t know. Anyway. I’m hunting doe bedding. Just a little point covered in briars in reasonably open woods. With a NE wind doe were bedding in there heavy with the wind coming off the cut at the top of the hill. Anyway. No deer until 930. To be expected hunting a small bedding area. 930 a doe starts coming down with a little one. I actually watch her stand up on her back legs and beat the crap out of her little to get it away. I thought uh oh she’s in heat. She coming in SLOW as heck. For 100 yards licking every single branch and briar she could get her lips on. All the way to her bed. She beds. Periodically she gets up for what I believe was because the sun moving. Sun gets in their eyes and they move. Makes sense to me. She makes probably 6-7 beds in a 2 hour period. It’s now 10 til noon. She’s bedded at 40 yards. I see some movement right behind her. All I could see was her back end at this point. Lean out the other side of the tree…absolute tank of an 8. This sucker starts wagging his tail like a dog and takes off galloping around rubbing his back and head ALL over all of the branches she was going through and licking. At one point he’s at 25 and Im drawn back. Literally yelling at him to get him to stop. He just wouldn’t…I’m guessing he was telling other bucks that might smell her licking branches that she’s taken? Or maybe trying to cover it up idk. But was an awesome hunt and awesome learning experience! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I’ve found that hunting that thick bedding you experience some wild things. Vocalization and just how do really act in the wild. I love it but don’t recommend it on private properties you’re planning on hunting multiple occasions. I’m constantly on the move. Hasn’t worked out for me yet though lol. But a hunt like that I call a success.. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Didn’t get a chance to post the story so I’ll do that now while I’m laying here and it’s fresh ha. Went into that area last night…the doe bedding I’ve been seeing those big ones. Wind was perfect. Had to leave early due to family obligations. Left my stuff up. Got in there super early this morning. Like clockwork at about 815 the doe filtered in to bed. It wasn’t 5 minutes later he came off the hill to check them all out to see if any were in heat. He came down the same trail that all the bucks have been coming down to check it. Except this time I was set up 10 yards downwind of it instead of 30+. The tree I was in was a bare poplar but I was in a saddle so had the tree to use for my advantage. I knew where the sun was going to come up and just like I drew it up the sun was in his eyes and he had no clue I was there. 8 yard shot double lung. He went 30 yards and crashed! It was an awesome morning and even though I know there were bigger deer in the area…it is public land and gun season is next week! Super pumped and super happy with him! Love it when a plan comes together! Sounds like a good set up point. This should put us at about the 4th place mark I believe.
Definitely time for us to start knocking down some doe lol Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Nicely done! I love it when a plan comes together like that. Looks like we have some cold temps moving in later this week and my son is itching to get out and sit on our standing bean plots. Our plan is to try and get him on something better than a 1-year-old buck, but if a big fat doe comes too close, I'm going to grab the crossbow and let her have it. We need some points.
Good like to you and the boy! I’m heading back out to MO for thanksgiving and I’ll be in the tree Thursday after turkey, Friday and Saturday. I’ll have another buck tag and if a nice doe goes by I’ll take her as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
We definitely have a shot at this thing if we all put some doe on the ground. Im going to score my buck in an hour or so and get him on the card Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
This buck was hit by a car/truck right on our property border. Someone cut the antlers off so unfortunately I don’t know which buck it was. I hope it’s not 1 of the 3 I’m thinking it is. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Could be the picture but he doesn’t look too big to me so I’d stay positive. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
And….come on fellas we are in the running! Let’s get some doe down! Few more bucks can also be added lol I know it’s easier said than done but I can assure you I’m gonna be on a mission to at least put 50 more up for us! May or may not have to shoot me a doe with a muzzleloader for the first time since like 2015 but I’m still gonna make sure I at least get one doe with a bow now that my buck tag is taken care of. I guess he wasn't and his bases were not that big either so that seems a little better for sure. My mom took that picture and sent it to me and they said that. It doesn't help that the big boys have probably moved to a different area to find another doe to breed and they haven't been on our cameras for a few days. They picked the wrong time to move lol! But today we got a picture of an up and comer we call Steve and another today of Left Split. We have 1 with a left split G2 and one with a right split G2. No right split sightings for a week or so.
