Got drenched tonight but I had the biggest deer I have in camera at 78 yards. His body is massive and has good main beams, is wide, and has decent time lengths. Got a photo but it sucks.
Todd and I spent all day yesterday scouting a new farm we picked up in central IL. It's absolutely loaded with deer and had some giant fresh buck sign on it. My biggest problem is going to be finding the time to get down there. 4 hours away isn't easy to get to for me so I may end up not being able to hunt it this fall. We'll see. Between my kids sports schedule and my wife traveling out of town I may have to sit out the first week and a half of the season. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing since I never kill anything worthwhile during the early season and just tend to stink up some of my better spots.
Did some scouting today. Have rain coming in tonight and tomorrow and figured the time was now. Hopefully washes a good bit of scent away. Anyway, I am absolutely stoked for this weekend! Found some incredible sign and pockets of raining acorns! Know exactly where I’m going to be every sit this weekend. Trying to get my girlfriend and family on deer but I’ll be amongst them also. Let’s go boys! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Fulton County, so on the other side of the state from you. Although I used to hunt down in Effingham many moons ago and just drove through there on my way to Kentucky.
What are you guys shooting this year for set ups? Last year I drank the heavy arrow coolaide and it worked well but I could hardly shoot 60 yards without my sight bottoming out, that was my fault for now knowing how to properly set up a single pin. This year I toned it down a bit and am at 498-500 grains with a 125 Levi Morgan Schwacker, the ones where they are like a single bevel mech. Reason I switched was because even though my deer last year died within 70 yards there was only a little bit of blood, which I like to have as an indicator.
Zombie slayers, 100 grain montec, and a bear adapt+. I’m always around the 400grain mark. Shot a buck and two doe last year with the same broadhead and arrow. All were pass throughs. I don’t ever carry a rangefinder so I’m not a fan of pin gap lol also keep my shots 30 and In. 90% are within 15 yards for me,here in the hills of Ohio. I'm shooting Victory VAP TKO with Sevr heads. Last year was my first time using them and for 1.5" and 2" heads. I wasnt sure which I'd prefer so I wanted to try but. I liked the cutting width of the 2" but the penetration of the 1.5". Well this year they came out with the 1.75" and I hopped on that train. We shall see how they go hopefully in November. Before that I was all about NAP Killzones. I would still use them but I just wanted to try something new for fun. Also new to me this year is a single pin. I have always used multi pin but as I get older the window gets cluttered up easily and confuses an old man. So I switched to single pin to make focus easier on me.
Haha well when they are consistently 15 yards and in your golden. That's trad close, you ever give longbow or recurve a try?
I agree with the single sight being easier on the eye, it's helped me with my grouping significantly too. I'm intrigued by the sevrs, my buddy/neighbor is shooting them but he won't be able to put them to the test for a while.
I’m shooting the Beman ICS. With a 100 grain exodus broadhead. I have tried several different broadheads over the and these ones are the best. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I bought a new Mathew’s V3 when they came out with a custom color scheme. Before that I had a switchback XT. I still shoot both of them but have been hunting with the V3 now. I get my arrows built by DCA custom arrows. Easton axis 300’s, I’m at about 485 grains total including a 100 grain 4 blade fixed broadhead. I can’t remember off hand what brand they are.
Yes I did lol could shoot great at a target. When it came to shooting a deer I just didn’t have the iron mind to pick a spot. Never missed so many deer in my life ha. After literally emptying my quiver 3 hunts in a row. I hung it up. Wasn’t worth it to me to make a bad shot. Every time I was even high or low…missed an absolute giant 8 point at 13 yards. That was the final straw. Envy those who do it! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I actually have a 2x magnifier lens on my sight and I use a clarifier in my peep sight. It’s pretty slick.
Haha I'd put it away too. There's something different about carrying rhe stick and string in the woods but at some point ethics come into play lol.
What sight are you shooting? Also, a clarifier in your peep? I've never heard of that, I'd be a bit freaked that it's come out and blind me ha.
