Things just got interesting. One of the areas on the military base I hunt is open for the first time in weeks tomorrow. I will be there all day. Already know where I want to be.....just need some cruising bucks.
I tossed in the towel, burned out and the sun was beating down on me as the wind oscillated my scent every direction a deer could possibly come from. In the drive home, about 3 miles from my house is a vut bean field. Had 2 deer walking it, could tell the one was a buck. As I got closer they were both bucks. Looked to be a 2 1/2 and 1 1/2. This was 4pm Going to take the next few days and figure out if I still have it in me and decide on Saturday then. Nothing about this season has gone right. I lucked into the one I shot and every choice since then has been the wrong one. I'm ready to toss a few back, sleep in and enjoy the storms tomorrow afternoon. Hunting is on hiatus
Just rough scored my buck, came up with 113 4/8. Couldn't find my 1/4" tape so ordered a new one, will get a final measurement when it gets here Thursday. Far cry from the 150" I dreamed of back in Sep/Oct But he'll fill the freezer about the same. Anyhow, looks like the best case scenario will be 160-165 points if I can get another deer on the ground
Well just like that, in the blink of an eye the next two weekends that I had planned to bowhunt got wiped out. The wife's gradmother passed away last night, shifting my priorities this weekend, and my paper machine will be shutting down next weekend for an outage. That leaves me with late season. Oh well, I guess having 6 different 8pts and a broken 10 within bow range isn't a compete failure of a season. Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
Well, boys....today was a washout with 60mph gusts, rain, and hail... Tomorrow, Sunday, Monday, and next Friday will be my last hurrah with a bow...if we get close, I will kill anything to keep this team together....you guys have been great....it would be worth killing a button buck and a fergie buck just to keep us together and win this thing...
Tomorrow is my last ditch effort to get another buck down and one more soze worthy to my goal. I'm going to sit my ambush stand outaide of the doe bedding. When I got there a bit before 9 today there was 3 young bucks there. Not sure why or what else may have went through, but I got out of dodge in hopes of sitting it tomorrow. Sunday is tomorrow dependent. If tomorrow goes like the majority of my sits I'm not going to waste my final day off. 50 points is 50 points, but won't burn my last buck tag on a small one until next weekend with the .44 mag. After gun season I rarely see antlers anyway.
Well, for the first time since 10/4 the bow is in the closet. Pulled the plug on my archery season today. Will be heading out next weekend for one day of firearm hunting and likely calling it quits after. I don't think I have ever been so burned out and frustrated before Thanksgiving let alone first firearm season. Going to try and make some big changes before next season starts, just not sure what they will be yet
What a difference a few hours makes. Mentioned I was going to try something different for next year. It might begin this year. Went over to my brothers, his next door neighbor hunts so have talked to him a few times. Well, he hunts his brother inlaws land(s) and is going to make a call about the upcoming firearm season. Might get the opportunity to hunt Calhoun County here in IL, borders Pike. Well, his brother inlaw used to bartend a bar me and my brother frequented, my brother knows him well and I have met him a few times. Brother still does pool work for him. Anyhow, after he stopped bartending he became a mortgage broker and has ever since been buying up hunting property when it comes up at decent prices. Guess he owns 1000's of acres in several locations across IL. Not sure to the exact sizes of each, locations or how many properties total. This could be that foot in the door/connection I have been looking for. I'm not opposed to leasing by any means, but if I can get a hook up for some decently priced property then all bets are off. I know it doesn't help this season and contest much, but I may lose sleep over the next week in anticipation. Not holding out hope for firearm this year, but my brother is good friends with him and can get word to him I interested if he is open to it.
So with the deer we have down....how close are we? I need the know if I should kill a yearling buck and a button buck tomorrow...: lol:
I have no cluex think our obly two bucks are still unscored. I will do that tomorrow, have a couple antler plaques now for this and last years antlers. Give me a week of no hunting, I'm not ready to give up on the team or my season. Have 3 archery permits left and would like to fill one of them. This season has been one like no other, while it might be par for the course for others this isn't something I am used to dealing with. Frustrations have been at an all time high
Probably not close at all Tony...to be honest. BUT, kill what you want. Good hunting weather for you this week? I still have 5 days to get it done.....Im going for it.
I am hunting tomorrow, Monday, and Friday with a bow....Saturday starts gun season.. So looking at the forecast, easy to do full day sits those days
Looks like great killing weather to me! Once again, our temps are back on the rise next week. Absolutely unreal terrible hunting temps.
My view this morning. I'm not hanging the bow up till I put one down! Gun season ideally pushes more deer into our property! Starting to get a little burned out but you won't kill one with that attitude! Passed a 120ish 9 I call V3 might regret it but can't shoot a big one of you shoot the little ones!
