The ladies are still kicking my butt, hunted twice this weekend and just can't seem to pick the right stand. Hopefully will slip in one more hunt but chances are slim.
I'm still alive, but I have not been hunting since my close call with "Windy". I have been making up for hunting so hard in November, and putting the house work off. I'm hoping that the last week of season will be open for me to hunt, but I can't promise anything.
Come on laddies, take off the lady panties and pull up the big boy pants! Thirty seconds is all the time it takes! Be there! Push through this! You can do it-want it!
i know i know. gotta get out at least two more times.... and you're right who knows what will happen, but gotta be out there.
Isaiah, did the Vikes buy you some time in the stand? That bye week might come in handy for us as well as the Bears! My season is over tomorrow and the weather isn't going to be safe to drive. Today would have been great to be out but unfortunately this silly work thing keeps getting in the way.
I caught some time while waiting for my bro-in-law to get to the house to work today, and pulled my trail cameras (batteries were dead in most of them by now). I last hunted 12/15, when I saw Windy trying to breed a doe. Between work, and trying to get the house ready for my parents, I haven't been able to hunt. On 12/15 I hunted a thicket stand, that is a great funnel near both a cut corn field and a cut bean field. I was almost sick when I saw these pictures today, thinking of what could of been. There is no way of telling if this buck would of made it to me with shooting light left, or if I could of even caught a glimpse of him, but he was headed down the trail my stand is set up on with a few minutes of light remaining. Here is my first pic I got of this buck back in November. First time I have ever seen him. And here are the 2 of him from last month. I'm going to start calling him "Claw". Here was another 2.5 year old, with some excellent potential. Reese was getting on me about not getting into the stand here lately , and I'm really hoping to try to sneak out either Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon.
It's 1:32 am Jan. 3rd. I'm just getting home from a bust of a hunt in New Mexico. I left Denver Friday morning (10:30am) and arrived in Pinon, New Mexico at 12:45 am Saturday. It was a hell of a drive through blowing snow and over icy road conditons. My sight with set on nailing a desert mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus crooki). I was so wired to "make it so", I pushed... The heater in my tent tailer couldn't keep up with negitive 20 F wind chill...I stayed warm inside four sleeping bags... There was zero deer movemnet at first light. I think the deer were frozen in their beds... I logged 150 additional miles trying to cut a fresh track in new snow-any deer track. I glassed and glassed...nothing. I popped a tire and had to replace it with my spare... Managed to heat up enough water for my top ramen dinner...and spent another cold night in the four sleeping bags. Got a morning hunt in Sunday...a little via foot and driving. Packed up at 10:30am and started back for Denver. Saw a buck and three does standing in a guy's backyard in Pinon as I left... I had a blowout on the trailer near Albuquerque... All that for a deer....you betcha! And, I would have been happy shooting a forky (the legal requirement)! On a good side note: Isaiah, I heard (while listening to the Broncos loss) the Bears are coming to Denver next season. Let's get together man! In the mean time, use that bye week to kill a toad!
Best of luck getting back out Scott. I would love to see you drop one of those bucks! Oh yeah, here's some additional info the record. If Al Gore would have been hunting with me this weekend, I would have tossed both he and his Global Warming concept out into the cold. I would have used his sleeping bag to stay warm... One last thing...Happy New Year everyone!
Happy New Year guys, hope it is a safe and productive one. I got out and hunting Friday afternoon in sub zero wind chill, at last light I had a mature doe and 2 young ones come in, finally got a shot at the mature doe at around 30 yards and hit square on her front shoulder, very little penetration. I checked the blood and had some bubbles but a light trail. I backed out and went back Saturday morning. Got on the trail right away and found my arrow, it was pretty much what I had expected bone lodged into the broadhead with about 5" of fat on the arrow. After about 150 yards of tracking a pretty good trail I found her bed with lots of blood but no deer, from there it was sporadic at best and lost her trail about 75 yards later. I'm pretty confident that coyotes probably bumped her from her bed and chased her onto the neighboring property that is posted and owned by a guy that lets no one on. I spent about 4 hours gridding my property but had no luck. I guess an appropriate end to a frustrating year. I learned a few things this year and was reminded the hard way of a few others. Good luck to those that are still hunting, sorry I wasn't able to post 50 more for the team.
One other thing.... LET'S WIN THIS THING SO WE CAN KEEP THE TEAM TOGETHER! It's been a fun group not to mention some great hunters.
Bummer Matt! Not getting them sometimes is part of the process. I'm glad you gave it your best. That's really all anyone can ask from us, right? When is your season over? Isn't it does only now? Yes, let's stay after it and keep this team together!
Archery is over but there is a season's choice antlerless until the 18th. We can bowhunt it but anytime the rifles come out I don't get excited about sitting in the trees, too many road hunters in my area. Not to mention I don't have a lot of time the next couple weeks. I may get out but it is probably unlikely.
