I was just getting on here to put this. We are going to be up there once the 4 bucks get put into the scorecard. I've got cooling temps, and a good moon phase for this weekend. I'm really going to get after it my remaining 4 days before the gun season.
This IS the weekend to get out Scott. I've got a 20 degree drop from Fri to Sat where I'm going in S. Illinois. I'll be out there for 6 days, then go right into the gun season at another farm. I think the woods are gonna be rockin! I still need to drop the hammer on a doe, and still have a tag for a slammer too! Good luck man, IT'S ON!
I'm thinking the same thing Guys. We really do have a good shot at this! Let's keep pushing! I'm home now (it's 12:30 am).... here's a picture for now. I need to hit the sack.
What a slammer Will, great buck! Over the weekend on saw several mature bucks chasing does, I wasn't able to hunt Monday but went out yesterday morning and afternoon and saw no mature bucks in those sits. There were does around but yesterday when a buck would be following every one was a 1.5 or 2.5 and the does seemed to only see them as an annoyance. My guess is that we have entered the "lock down" stage at this point and the mature bucks are tending and segregating the hot does. What are your thoughts? I'd like to hear what you guys have been seeing.
Dren, I think you're right. The fact I saw 30 smallest bucks (they reminded me of satellite bull elk) cruising and very few does lead me to believe the girls were "holed up". I saw two mature bucks chasing (one is dead). On Monday, I moved my stand away from what I felt was the fringe and closer to heavy cover where I thought the girls would be. I made the right decision. My does sightings doubled in a few hours. I killed the beast as he was tending. I actually hit him with a forty yard quartering to shot. The arrow glanced off his left front leg bone, went throught low on his chest, and then sliced his stomach open. He was so busy with love; I was able to get a second shot. That arrow was deflected over his back by a limb. I anchored him with a third arrow straight through the chest from forty. The point I'm making here...this buck was heavy with rutting activity. But, I didn't see a huge amount of chasing! They're a few day away still....but close!
Awesome deer Will, I'll take one 1/2 that size. :D I'm pumped guys, It's really warm out there, but that wn't stop me, I just can't decide where to sit. I messed up Prime bedding the other day from wounding a doe. But that is the place to be, but I feel I need to let it cool off a little while, So I'll probably just set up on the Cornfield edge this evening, Where they bed, they're either there or they're not, but there's only one way to find out.:D
That is a beautiful buck Will. Congrats again. Temps are still right around 75 all the way until Friday. Cold/rain front is moving through Saturday, is supposed to bring the temps back down into the 50's. I'm really hoping this gets the bucks up on their feet.
Short delay........had to take my mother to washington medical center for some last minute test. Looks lhe will be fine but it ate up all my time I had set aside for going to the butcher. Heading out for a morning hunt, when the butcher opens at noon I will call and try to schedule a time this evening to get the rack and score it up. Keep hunting hard and be safe guys !! Dave
Hurry Dave, It'll look good to have four slammer Team #6 bucks in a row on the score thread. We want the other teams shaking in their boots!
three bucks for team 6 in a row on the official score thread. now thats what im talking bout guys!!!!!!!!!
This morning was my last hunt before rifle opens here Saturday, lets just say it was less than eventful. Last night I saw my big 8, he came in to around 75 yards but didn't duck into the woods like I needed him to. I also had another nice 8 just barely skirt me earlier in the evening, the deer were moving like crazy last night and then NOTHING this morning. For the first time ever I don't have a deer down before rifle, I've never had to hunt after rifle so this will be a new challenge. Way to put the points on the board boys!
Oh the shame !!! I hope Will sits down and thinks about the bad thing he has done by letting the WEST down !!! I suspect the big rack and great experience will ease the guilt though !! LOL I know it would for me !! :D Congrats again Will !! Tim
LOL Tim, I have weighed the consequences of my actions. Yes, the shame is killing me! I essentially hand delivered the East a mess of points. What was I thinking?. However, I have the situation covered. Just this morning I sent an email to youngFart (Rocky Steers) to let him know the pressure was on to shoot an even bigger buck in Alberta. Rocky is such a good team player! He's already begun scouting for a 180 class buiser for an offset plus on the tally sheet. The big thing on my mind now is to see Dave's buck right under the other three. Can you imagine team six tagging out...boom, boom, boom! I can!
I'm calling my shot. Saturday morning is calling for perfect conditions. About a 20 degree cool off, and supposed to be raining all night and letting up in the morning. Something is going to die Saturday morning. I checked the scoreboard, and we are going to be right there with the leaders once the 3 remaining bucks get put in the scorecard. This thing is ours with another good buck or 2.
