Sat in the same stand I killed my 155" out of a year ago today. Same wind, same type of conditions, just might get lucky and have the same type of result I was wrong. Set a doe decoy out, something I've had great luck with in the past. Had 2 does enter the field about 40 yards away, spot the decoy and bolt out of there as fast as they had entered. That is the way it goes though. One thing I have learned from decoying the last few years, is that does hate these things.
Matt, You had me on the edge of my seat! You'll get him! Keep pushing. Great advice Dave. Scott, I would love to see a deer decoy...
I sat in the scrub island stand last night and watch a buck come out of the corn and follow the edge of the woods around ....... walking RIGHT BY our other stand ... I picked the wrong stand as well...taking the next 2 days off ... gonna be snow on the ground for Saturday's hunt
Starting tomorrow I have 6 straight days of hunting. If I'm going to get it done, then this is my best chance. High for tomorrow is in the 40's, our coldest day so far this year.
I'm stuck at work today, dying to be out in the woods but I guess gotta pay the bills. Taking tomorrow off so I'll have 3 maybe 4 straight days in the woods. My wife and daughter are off to a dance competition this weekend so my son and I will be hunting hard. It should be fun, I've never had a stretch like this where I can focus on hunting so much. Hopefully it pays off. Good luck out there guys.
I'm on a plane bound for Illinois tomorrow. Four straight days of hunting for me also... Let's get-r-done Team Six!
Oh it's getting done, Will(mom) Work today and tomorrow ... then 4 days off again and snow on Saturday ... can't wait! Go get them, boys! Hopefully Reese will get his arse out there and start pulling some weight! :D
Potential scary moment tonight. Got home and thought I should shoot my bow to make sure everything was still on. I had shot it last Sunday afternoon, so I was shocked to find my 20 yard pin hitting 3 inches left. 30, 40, 50 were all off way more than that. Long story short, everything is dialed back in. Just happened that the sight had shifted slightly, and glad I caught it before it could have created a problem. I'm unbelievably excited for tomorrow's hunt. Not sure where I'm going in the A.M., but for the afternoon hunt, I am slipping in tight to a bedding area. I have left this spot alone all year, as it was my #1 potential setup come rut. I'm going to have a short window to get in there with south winds on the horizon, so tomorrow is the day. Good luck out there this weekend guys. We have 5 does and 1 buck in our bag, but we still need a lot more inches of antler to take this thing home.
I'm thinking that maybe it got shifted during my hunt last night. The ride back across one of our farm roads is a bumpy one, and with the bow case strapped on the 4 wheeler rack I'm thinking that it may of just bumped loose. This is purely a guess though, it's never happened to me before. 3 inches at 20 yards really isn't much of an adjustment on the sight itself, but when shooting at a target it becomes a very big problem. About 5 years ago while gun hunting, I bumped my shotgun scope while pulling it into the stand. Later that afternoon I was 60 yards away from closing the deal on a 130" 10 pointer that I was playing cat and mouse with the past day and a half. My shot sailed way high, I just played it off as a bad shot. Never even crossed my mind that my scope was off. The next morning, I missed a doe at 20 yards. Went back to camp and shot the gun, and I was shooting over a foot high at 50 yards. It's always been dialed in everytime I have pulled it out of the case since, but it just goes to show that making sure your equipment is in check is something that can't be overlooked.
I'm going to hit the road tomorrow morning, hunt the afternoon, sat and sun. I saw some activity last weekend, including a Big buck jump out of his bed to harass a doe right at first light. I know exactly where he was bedded, but the farmer may have screwed me by letting the cattle loose in the area, I hope not. If so, I doubt he moved very far. Gonna see if I can catch him on the downwind side of another area that's usually popular with the ladies, right across the road. I already have knots in my stomach! Good luck guys!!
Dudes!!!!! I am going in the mornin!!!!! So freaking STOKED!!!! I think me mentioning that I am going to start shooting my bow in the house had something to do with it....hehehe Almost hit 3 bucks on the way into work today. Nose to the ground and on a mission!!! Blood will be spilled this weekend! Good luck guys!!!
Heading out now for an evening hunt.....need a doe so I can start hunting bucks again. Called butcher today, will get rack back tomm. or sunday. Be safe and goodluck guys !!! Dave
In stand at 3:45....young doe which is perfect ( did not want to shoot a breeding doe with rut starting) showed up at 4:50. Dave has now fulfilled the state requirement of two doe down before 2nd buck tag can be used. Guess who is hunting Big bucks again?....lol I will be back in stand tomm. morning hoping Hightower (the huge 8) or another massive buck walks by. Be safe and goodluck !!! Dave
Reese good luck tomorrow! Hope you lay down a giant. Dave, man you are on a roll here of late. Can't wait to see a pic of you behind "Hightower". Today was my first day of vacation time. Going on weather conditions, it was also the best day to be out there. I went into the stand where I have pictures of the "Growth Buck" moving during daylight, that I posted a week ago. While he wasn't the #1 target this morning, I wanted to kill him if given the chance. My own hesitation and mistakes is the reason I am not sitting here telling you the story of how I killed the "Growth Buck". I rattled at 7:30, and like always, I remain standing, and waiting for a buck to come running into my setup. Usually I have my bow in hand, but on this cold morning I left my gloves at the truck so I have the bow hanging up and my hands in my pockets. Shortly after rattling I see a deer with antlers trotting my direction about 100 yards away. I raise my binocs to see a buck with fairly short main beams and only 4 points on one side. I initially thought it was the 8 pointer I have passed twice this year already. I wasn't going to shoot him, so I didn't even grab for my bow. Well as the deer stopped in my shooting lane around 25 yards, I was able to see the 2" kicker off the G-2, and knew it was my buck at this point. I was able to get my bow, but at this point he had moved out of my lane. I waited for him to enter another lane, but he made a 90 degree turn and came to 10 yards directly head on. This is where my other mistake comes in. For some reason unknown to me, I took the wrong path into this stand in the darkness this morning. Well this buck crossed my entry and froze. So here he is at 10 yards and I have no shot. He stood there for what seemed like forever, but eventually turned and retreated away. Had I taken the path I planned to, the buck would of most likely passed by me broadside at 5 yards. I stopped him again a bit over 30 yards, but he was behind some trees and not a chance I would of been able to sneak an arrow to his vitals. Throughout the morning, I saw 2 small 1.5 year olds chasing a doe, and also a 120ish 9 pointer chasing a doe. This afternoon I went to my bedding area stand I have been holding out. Upon arriving I felt the wind swirling, and blowing my scent directly into the thicket. Wasn't long until I heard the sound of deer blowing and running away. I hurried up, got down, and ran to another stand. Only saw 1 coyote from there. Overall, it was a fun day to be out there. Despite blowing a good chance to kill a good buck, I have 5 more days and some prime hunting ahead of me.
Dave congrats on another doe man!!! Scott I will txt ya when an arrow is released man ( you too tony) LOL Good luck inthe morning guys !!!!! blood shall be shed tomorrow!!!! All my gear is out on the porch and readry to roll Peace out fella's
I'm drinking a quick cup of coffee and then making the drive to the farm as well. Good luck out there Team 6. Hopefully we have some good news to share tonight.
