Ok, so here is the story:

Last year, my brother passed on this buck as he was probably in the 120s. We were really hoping to see what he might turn into this year. So this summer we got trail cam pics and couldn't believe what he grew into. We named him Coathanger due to his right beam dipping down like a hook. We didn't think he was gonna score this much though, but we still wanted to shoot him. Well, my brother wasn't getting any more pics of him and we where scratching our heads as to where he might have went. So we turned our focus elsewhere and kind of put this deer on the back burner.

Fast forward to last night. I'm sitting about 25 feet up in my lock on and have 2 does come out 20 yards from my stand at 5:15. As they are out in the beans I see a doe and two fawns working my way from the north out in the field. As they get closer I notice a buck is slowly walking behind them eating beans without a care in the world. I thought he looked decent at first, but couldn't tell because his rack blended in so well with the standing beans. I had no idea how big he was til I threw the binos on him. As soon as I got on him, I thought holy $hit, that's Coathanger! So immediately I begin shaking as he is walking straight to me.

All the does begin to get nervous as he is getting to close for their liking, so they start walking back in on the trail 20 yards away. I can only think at this point that "Wow, this is fixing to happen, he's gonna follow them right back in." And that is exactly what he did. He strolled up to 21 yards acting like he was the king of the woods. So as I'm drawn back, I'm thinking to myself to just pick a spot, control my breathing, and take my time.

I release and see that the shot isn't bad, but isn't great. It's midways in his body, but I thought at the quartering angle that it should've taken out both lungs. Well he runs about 50 yards into the woods and just stands there hunched over, and I'm screaming in my mind "Fall Over"!!!! Well, he walks another 20 yards and beds down in some grass in a slough and all i can see is his rack. He tries to get up a couple times and can't. On the third time he finally gets on his feet and immediately goes right back down. At this point I take my binos down and grab my phone for a quick text. I look back up and he's gone.

So immediately I get sick to my stomach with worry. I don't know if he fell over right there or got up and left. So, I make the decision to wait a couple hours and call for help. When we make it we find decent blood up to the point to where I saw him bedded. Then nothing. I'm about to puke at this point. So my dad walks up a little ways and finds some blood on a trail that he followed. After that, nothing again. The trail splits and I take the right and my dad takes the left. I'm creeping along and finally see a pool of blood where he bedded. Five feet beyond that, another pool. And five feet beyond that.....a 160" giant! I about lost it. This is by far the biggest deer I have ever shot. And to get him a mile from any pics that we had and just show up out of nowhere, well it's hard to describe how I was and still am feeling.

He ended up having 13 scorable points and dressed out at 210 lbs. That puts a live weight of somewhere around 250 lbs. What a hog! I feel so blessed and fortunate to have taken the buck of a lifetime with my new wife, family and friends there. What an experience!

Way to go Snake! Awesome buck, and a good story to go with it. I'll be back at it tomorrow and got a feeling in my bones that some points are going on the board. Just a feeling; no guarantees. :D Kansas starts next Thursday.

Chart33, where are you going in Kansas? I'll be near Marysville.

I'm headed to Woodson County in southeast KS. The best man in my wedding and a regular poster on BH.com has set me up with opportunity to hunt their family land out there. It feels like the days leading up to Christmas right now. I fly out Tuesday morning.

Well good luck! I hope you get a good one. I went last year for the first time. Hunted by myself on public land but managed to kill a 159 over a decoy. I'll be trying that again this year for sure. I leave Thursday for 10 days.

I hunted this morning and saw 4 bucks cruising but they wouldn't come to rattling, a grunt tube or the can. Don't know what the deal was. My buddy was on the same ridge and saw 6. He grunted one in and missed it at 32 yards. Didn't see a single doe! I'll try it again in a couple of days. It's supposed to cool off a little tomorrow night. 91 degrees when I got in the truck at 1 pm today!
