I’m not sure I will ever get to do a trip like this anywhere far from home. I have always been interested in a mule deer hunt but it’s just a dream. What’s the story behind wolves being reintroduced? Seems like I have read about the issue Minnesota now has with wolves. Have you hunted mulies out there?(colorado)
@tynimiller have you taken a few bucks during the early reduction we have. Are you going this year? I’m talking about the red zone not a draw hunt.
Nothing concrete as far as I know about the reintroduction of wolves as of yet, but there's talk among the biologists/FWP folks about the idea. Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk
I've helped hunt (spotting, & driving others on cruising roads) mullies, but I don't hunt them. I've seen several large bucks 150-near 200 class...once you have your lungs rattled by an elk bellowing at point blank, mullies just don't get me near as excited. If I lived out there i would probably be hunting both elk and mule deer. CO voted to reintroduce wolves via ballot (seems to me a lot of liberal city NIMBY types) in a very close vote <1% margin, if I recall. There was a lot of anti hunting lobbiests involved who apparently included some problematic language, such that they (wolves) likely not ever be allowed to be hunted. They are expected to be released within the next year, I believe.
Personally I've never used a reduction zone tag on a buck, I've shot and used regular tags on bucks on some of my properties which are in reduction zones however. I don't rush out there and try and get my antlerless down like some do...good way of pushing too much too quick and just flat ruining the place then for later. There have been a few years however where I've already got an anterless down by that final week of September and have actually sat a time or two with the intent of shooting a buck only if one worthy came by.
Shoot and this year I'm so far behind on plots and weather didn't cooperate that this weekend or next will find me replanting a few of them I bet, while fertilizing the others instead of hunting.
Set up now for success later. I've got two private spots I treat with special care, then about 10 public chunks I hit up. In MN, trail cameras on public land are not allowed, so it's hunting fresh sign and hoping for the best. Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk
All right, fellas, we need to figure out the name and captain thing. Season opener for me is next weekend! Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk
I’m good with whatever…other priorities are consuming my time and focus at least for the next couple weeks.
I tried to start a beginning list of names but no one is adding to it. Got any. Do we want any name or do we want the #6 in with it? What can we talk about that gets people talking? - what is your favorite stand location for you first sit? - what day will Bill kill his elk on?
Favorite stand first off would be overlooking beans from about 20 yards inside the field edge. Feels good to watch a big area as the sun comes up. It takes Bill 3 days. After a close encounter on the first day, the third day he connects with a bull near a watering hole. Good luck and travel safe!
Don't have a favorite stand site. I usually find an oak flat relatively near an ag field to sit over. I've got a couple of spots that qualify for my first shot of the year. Two years ago, the spot brought in a decent 3 (maybe 4 year old) 7pt, a basket 8, and a couple forks. No shots fired that day, though. The acorns are raining down already, and my neighbors Apple tree is producing plenty. I've got 7.5 days to figure out sit #1. Temps should be in the mid 70's for next Saturday. When I get back to NC, my first sit may be in nice oak grove I found in the middle of a pine forest. Me and a doe have some unfinished business…I may hang my stand in a nice hickory that holds its leaves till late in fall…
I’m good wit whoever volunteered for captain first. Im not picky on the name. My favorite stand and also my most frustrating stand is a stand we call the big rock. Missed my wife 9 point from that tree in 2018 and luckily killed him the next day in another stand 200 yards away. I killed my Halloween buck out of that tree in 2020. Both scored 149 and some change. I seem to always have good buck encounters there during the rut. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Well got the call, my biggest piece the owner is putting it up for sale. my father and I may consider selling both our smaller pieces and buying it but only if the owner would consider a land contract and be patient for us to move ours…..not the news you want to hear this time of year though….
That sucks. My best piece ended probably 8 years ago. Hunting these last 7 years has been very weak. Hard to find places worth anything and I’m not paying mega bucks for these leases. But I make do with what I got. Hopefully you’ll work a deal out.
I had some time to think as I crossed the country. Not your average Joe or Average Joe's was another couple pokes...I'll be preoccupied the next few days
I like either of those. Think get a list of a few of your favorite and post them up. We can then put a small vote on them if you’d like. Or just pick one haha. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
