Fwiw-He may have better luck close to town,if he can get permission to hunt private. Uwarrje is public land, about an hour west of him, but there are some smaller parcels that might be worth checking on his side. Public areas closer to Raleigh get a lot of pressure. Sandhills is the other big public area near him, but I don't have any insights about it...
Sorry for the absence, just got home from Colorado. It was an absolutely amazing trip even if it wasn’t for hunting. Got within 15 yards of 2 bull moose, saw a lot of elk, a couple cow moose, and 2 really nice 160+ class mule deer! The mountains just bring me so much joy. Im good with Tinks for captain and any name works for me! Gonna start practicing more and get some more tree work for hunting! It’s getting closer! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
my buddy just one night one of a New Mexico elk trip connected on a beast and thing fell within sight of impact. He couldn’t believe it, they went to a ridge first afternoon with plan to locate and move next morning….bugle close and they moved and shot and done. Crazy
Damn it. How come no one I know is going to colorado before I do to about for me. That's about 45 miles away from my hunt units. Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk
My tag is good for either sex elk, first rifle, in zones 28 & 37. We'll likely spend most of our time in 28, but if we strike out for 3 days there, I've got another area I would check out in the other zone. Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk
We'll have half a day to scout on the Friday before. I've got a good feeling about the prep work I've done, but the little seeds of doubt are starting to creep in and grow. Being in my head is a terrible place to be. Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk
I’ll gladly give this over to Tink. He said he would do it too and Dan was good with it as well. Plus he has the experience of that role.
Build your network...use creative sources. But if you ever are looking at 45, 48, 49, or 231, hit me up. Off season, I'm happy to look at topos / ariel maps and offer thoughts. Ps. Look for N or NE facing wooded slopes, with water near by. Get GE on a desktop, there's a correction for mountain steepness set it to 1.5. Use the seasonal image history to check foliage and traffic. Give thought to who might be in the unit during your of season...hikers, skirts, bikers... There are lots of other great tidbits out there that you can use prior to stepping for in the unit.
It could be we're all big stoners and want to go where the legalization all began, but we're using the hunting/scouting as a cover story. Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk
I started hunting Colorado when I got age 50, I had an offer from someone on this board, I lost 60# that year in training and to prepare. My biggest regret was waiting till I was 50 to start. Also keep in mind, otc tags in Colorado will probably go away within a few years, the population of elk will drop when they introduce the wolves...so you may need to look more broadly than CO.
I'm 42, and this is my second out of state trip. The first was last year to Wyoming to chad Mule Deer and Pronghorn. Successful on both accounts, the deer was a button buck that I thought was a doe. Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk
I’m glad I was able to start young. Wish I could go more than I have been able too tho. Since joining the military in December of 2019 my time has been stretched thin with trainings and a deployment. Next year I’m making a trip happen. Last trip I went was in 2019 with Bill! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
