Depart 9/9 Drive ~1700 miles from NC to central Colorado... Arrive 9/10. Find elk, kill elk, break down elk, pack it off the mountain. 9/11, head into town for a shower, and get the elk frozen. 9/12-14 wait for my buddy to arrive. 9/15- (up to 9/23) find him an elk, kill elk, break down elk, pack it off the mountain. Head for home 9/23...drive ~1700 miles. Arrive home (on or before 9/24). Or something like that. 2 weeks including travel time. We've never doubled up on a hunt, yet. But it's a decent draw unit that I've hunted before and got a cow elk. Last time I was in the unit I was able to find and get into elk 5 days in the first week...taking a zero day to head into town to freshen up (shower, laundry, big meal). So having a feel for the unit should help some...even if the elk aren't where I found them prior, knowing some roads and trails should help. Though, frankly, I'm probably the last prepared I've ever been, this year. Aches and pains are increasingly limiting me...
So we're just waiting on @atlasman? Anybody have his # or email? Anybody got time to be captain? Thoughts on the few names suggested so far? Any thoughts on a team avatar/logo?
don’t forget “Thankful we don’t have Joe” lol as far as captain I’ve been it enough, but one thing I do for my teams is I’ll send out team messages usually few times a month, keep folks engaged and summarize what’s been happening. The worst team has never been the ones with the fewest points, the worst teams have always been the ones that lacked people engaging in the team thread
Hey guys. Hunting hard in NY as always. Been a pretty up and down year so far at our land. Neighbors logging and lots of disturbances in the woods but it will all settle down in time for the season (I hope). We had a Booner blind blow over in the off season and wind damage to another tower so lots of time spent so far doing repairs. Plots look like absolute trash and we simply don’t know why. We had a food plot company analyze our soil this year and results are worst we have seen in awhile. That is very disappointing. Upsides are our deer numbers and bucks are really healthy lately with our camp taking at least one good buck (130’s) every year for the last few and a bunch of close calls. Someone will kill a nice one this year…….hope it’s me And my brother just texted me that I won a Mathews Phase 4 tonight at a raffle he’s at. We will see……..If I don’t score it absolutely won’t be for a lack of effort. I can kill a doe literally any time I want to but not really my thing lately. If we need one for the board I’ll find a reason to fill the smoker with venison sausage.
I agree Ty. Always fun to see everyone keep in touch. I have never been Captain and don’t have the desire to. If anyone wants it they have my vote. If no one wants it I would do it.
I'll agree with Camo, if no one else wants to captain this rag tag band of misfits, I'll do it. I captained my squad a couple of years ago, so I've got a little experience. Just don't ask me to come up with the artwork. My last year's team went radio silent about halfway through, which made this no fun. Let's keep things light and fun and talkative! You have my vote Tink. Like Tynimiller, I can hunt some reduction area starting the 15th, but I just can’t get excited about the hot weather to do it.
I'm fine with whoever wants the captain gig as long as it's not me lol. My season opens October 1, but I probably won't hunt the first few weeks unless the weather is perfect. This year will be a new chapter for me. I'm flying solo. My oldest son just moved to north Carolina, he and I hunted together a lot. My daughter turns 16 soon and has a full plate with school, band, friends etc. She doesn't have time to hunt with dad....so it just me this year. Good news is my stands won't be getting pressured and burnt out. The bad news is, well, I'd trade that any day to have my kids out there with me. To add insult to injury, I got hurt at work a month ago and haven't been able to do much of anything related to hunting. I'm starting physical therapy this week with a plan to be back to work by the end of September. No cameras up, no stands checked, etc. I will be flying blind this year but I look forward to the challenge.
Where’d your son land in NC? Happy to try to point him at some spots, if he’s nearby… Good luck on the PT. I wasn’t out of work, hurt, last year, but was in chronic pain. The PT made a world of difference for me. I hope you have the same outcome.
He's living in Sanford. He said he plans to bowhunt probably next year after he's settled. Thanks, I'm glad I didn't have to have surgery. Hopefully the therapy gets me walking around better.
