So this morning I got on stand at about 5:30a. It was a nice 42 degrees with barely any wind. I was settled for no more than 10 minutes when I had two deer at least one of them a shooter buck, slowly make their way up to my stand from the bottom of the pine thicket I was sitting in. The one shooter passed directly under my climbing sticks and stopped for a few seconds to smell the spot I was standing in. He didn't seem to smell me at all and just continued on his way slowly probably to bed somewhere in the corn nearby. The other deer also made it's way off into the corn somewhere. I only had enough light to see the light colored antlers and ears - I could tell the spread was just outside the ears but there was no way I could make a shot. There simply wasn't enough light.

Shooting light would take another 15-20 minutes to arrive. The next visitor was a very small red fox - probably a young one. He sat at the base of a tree about 10 yards away.

A few minutes goes by and he makes his way through the pines to my north. I sit back down and rest my eyes for a few minutes. When I look up again, I can see a large doe and smaller deer about 60 yards out and making their way towards my stand. They close to about 40 yards and turn off towards my right which puts them in the edge between the corn and pines.

Now I had hunted this spot 9 days ago from a different tree and got busted by a doe because I was basically on her sight line when she came out of the corn. That day she simply turned around and walked back into the corn.

I think this was the same doe today. I think she altered her route and walked a few rows into the corn to avoid me. Luckily, this time I chose a tree higher up the hill and with a much better view and shooting position.

She started walking through the corn about three rows in. When she got in as close as she was going to get, I bleated to stop her and she did. Gave me about a 17 yard shot. I feel like I rushed a bit and because of that and/or because of the corn I hit her high and forward in the shoulder blade. She dropped immediately but was obviously paralyzed. I nocked another arrow and sent it her way aiming for the liver hoping the arrow would hit the liver and go through to lungs. That seemed to work and she expired about 30 seconds later.

Turns out I got 6 inches of penetration through the shoulder blade at the expense of breaking one blade on the slick trick. This is exactly why I wanted to switch to a fixed blade arrow setup with high penetration potential this year - just in case of shots like these. Even if I hadn't hit spine, I think she would have been a dead deer running. The arrow lodged in one lung would have torn her up.

This self-filming thing is quite a challenge so the video isn't the best but here's what I have:

Maryland Bowhunting Doe Harvest - 9/18/13 - YouTube

Anyway, although I wish I had made a better more lethal first shot, I feel very lucky for having such an easy recovery, though hauling out this 100+ lb slick head was a chore lol.

Thanks guys! Yeah the filming aspect is a challenge but makes it that much more rewarding. It can be a pain but I like it so far!

Hey Guys!! This morning was a blast. The deer were moving all morning. At 7:00 I had a buck come in at 10 yards...

Since I was hunting a EAB zone and I didn't have my doe tag filled yet, I could not shoot. At 9:00, I had three more bucks just hanging around at 30 yards, but I wasn't able to get a good look at them since they were in some thick brush.

At 10:30 I saw two does feeding along the corn field edge and started to feed towards me in the woods which btw was loaded with acorns and I guess that's why I was seeing deer all day. I took the doe at 10 yards and she darted off in the corn field. I was worried for little bit because I didn't find my arrow and I didn't find blood until I hit the corn field which was about 35 yards from where I was set up. There was a lot of blood when it gushed out, but in between the gushes it was very sparatic. I didn't think I was going to find her in the corn field because I lost blood, but then I saw a drop, went in the direction i thought she went and found a another pool of blood. When I exited the corn she was layin in the tall grass and didn't go more than 75 yards. Great day, wish I could have made it out for the afternoon hunt!

    And here she is:
