should be a good time regardless of the outcome. I don't really get to hunt with my dad that often any more so that's kind of the highlight for me of the trip. I will be focusing on getting him one first before myself that's for sure.
What rifle set up you shooting? I inherited a .257Roberts Winchester Model 70 (1973 year) and he used to go out west all the time for mulies and antelope....first thing I take with that gun I want to be either or.....I just have never enjoyed gun hunting but in his honor I'm gonna make an exception some time.
I will be using my buddies Remington 270 since the only rifle we own is my great grandpas 30-30 lever action. Cant use a rifle in out area so never really felt the need to have one. Yeah I am not much a gun hunter really either but wanted the best odds at coming home with something, and since my dad and buddy are going using a rifle is more possible for them. I killed my first deer with our 30-30 but would like to do one more thing with it at some point then let it collect dust with whatever it kills.
Heck yeah man.....that 30-30 would be my preference if a close enough shot occurs....something always special about looking down at a buck while holding a time piece from the past lives of loved ones. Blessings brother, I know one thing, you will see some gorgeous country out there man!
Honestly, I'd take a DSLR with me. Hunt with it if anything not a Mulie walks out or is located....beauty will be all around brother! The guy I'm named after lives out in WY as does a family member....simply breath taking land honestly.
Oh trust me my dslr will be in my pack the whole time. I will have one tripod with my camera and pops will have the other with spotting scope and phone mount.
Well after thinking about pushing it tomorrow morning with a hunt.....a North wind is really only good for spots I'm saving for when seeking starts. Gonna fight the urge and not hunt and focus on getting some work done for job from house and also around the house. Then midday go hang the replacement stand for the stolen one. Pull a couple cards and slide out. Not pushing it is tough but gotta do it. Saturday morning wind swings and I think could be awesome for an early season hunt at a couple spots.
Wind is kind of iffy for me to sit the east side of the farm this weekend. Going to check cams on Saturday depending on what those show I might be able to sit the plot just all depends what way he comes from. worst case I will just go sit the pines and see what's showing up around there. Lot of tracks around that place when I was there on Tuesday.
Got out this morning for a sit on that local property. Ended up surrounded in does but no shot at anything but fawns. Also passed a small 1 y/o 5 pointer and about a 120-125" 3 y/o 8 pointer as well. The 8 was actually running does all morning. Wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it myself, it's very early for that. He had a big body on him too, a good 180lb+ deer dressed. I hope I'm not gonna regret passing him in a few months.........
Ah you can always shoot him late season...good morning for ya. My update sucks for this that don't group text here ya go: Well fellas wish I for once had good news....hunted swamp property for first time this morning and after the hunt discovered our camera located right in the middle of the property overlooking brassica plot was stolen. Needless to say I knocked on many a door and gained a few neighboring friendships and acquaintances and eliminated a bunch of suspects. Only glimmer of hope was a pull of another cam showed bucks retreating into sanctuary at first light this morning by a stand I'm gonna hunt this afternoon....need some treestands therapy big time.
Well fellas this is the least I have hunted early season in a long time. The temps have been warm here and my cameras haven't given me any reason to be away from family and in a tree on a warm evening. Gonna continue to let my stands rest. Also learned along time ago that the key to being successful when you have a family is don't burn your wife out on hunting before the rut starts kicking or the weather starts cooling off. Good luck fellas love seeing all these does dropping, really making it hard to be patient. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Haven't been out much either but I'm not too worried about burning the wife out. With the temps and lack of movement, I'm worried about burning my stands out. Another week and I'll be ready to start hitting it a little harder.
Only made it out Saturday evening. Just seen two does. The came out way down to the south of me early and eventually worked there way right to the base of my tree. Have a ton of things to get done between after work tonight and when I leave tomorrow night. But going to try and squeeze in a hunt tomorrow afternoon. Temps are dropping 15 degrees and the wind will be right for me to sit the east side wood lot. All deer get a pass no questions unless its turkey foot just because it would delay us leaving since I have to check in any deer at the lease for CWD. Did have this guy show back up and still undecided.
I was able to get out on Friday morning and again on Saturday evening. Friday - nothing. Saturday was a fun evening. Saw one doe, kicked two deer walking around. Kicked a bear. Kicked a turkey, and walked up on a bedded small 6 or 8 pointer. Spend 5 minutes watching him then I decided to move off. He was legal however, early in the season and limited to one buck, he was not in any danger. He let me walk right by him without moving. I did check the camera I have in my prime archery spot. Was happy to see some smaller bucks and this guy! Looks to be a 7. Really wide and a big body.
Well fellas the issues are boiling over....seems like I complete a new criminal theft report each week lately. Done with the most recent and now forwarding the entire history of the issues from last October when we caught on camera 2 guys hunting the state ground (got positive identity on one from a friend!) and the DNR simply haven't got anything done so forwarding the entire history of emails, pictures...correspondance to the district DNR commander just in case it has gone under a huge pile they have no doubt. Despite the rage and frustration I did have a good evening hunt Saturday with nearly ending a doe's life but she didn't cooperate and than Sunday evening saw nothing until walking back to truck in the alfalfa field were 3 that waited till I got within like 40 yards to take off....scared the crap out of me in the dark. Had this guy on camera at the riverbottom property up until the first of October when camera card went full....may try putting a hunt or two together for him in the evening this week....not a bad deer at all:
