I didn't expect this, but my absolute best set for a pre-rut buck is going to be perfect for the first two days. We have the same weather pattern forecasted for opening day that we had last year. I've got Thurs/Fri off work and can hunt through Sunday. Hopefully the deer follow the script!
Best case scenario for my riverbottom property as well here....not RD's bedroom but the 2 bucks here are P&Y no doubters so who knows maybe I'll try beating my best buck and shortest season from 2009 (less than 3 hours in the stand) :D Won't be hunting Thursday morning but will slip in early afternoon both then and Friday is the plan.
Ty I know the feeling with having a limited amount of time to try and get it done before gun season rolls around. It kind of adds a little pressure that you don't want when it comes to hunting. Just enjoy the season and take the first thing that gets your blood going. The time is just about here Seems like the weather is in our favor for the three of us, Hopefully at least one of us will be able to connect. As long as the wind stays NE and doesn't switch to a hard North I will be in the food plot transitioning between standing corn and beans where the last picture of turkey foot was.
Amen brother, I think that some serious stand time is needed with all this added stress and a bunch of work crap and potential small claims fight with wife's ex-employer. Need some of that God's air, 20-27feet up and His creation waltzing around me.....that my friends rejuvenates the soul!! Something is gonna die this week/weekend....if not multiple things for the Honovi Hunters I can feel it! :D
Yes I very much agree...I've hunted 1 hunt since killing my doe opening day. Busy has been an understatement for me. I'm looking forward to my Wisconsin trip so much.
Got off the phone with the county sheriff's office. The Incident/Case number given to me and a run down of potential things occurring. They are VERY VERY familiar with the family suspecting and while they have no doubt their involved, without any hard tangible evidence of them taking it all they can do is go question them and let it be done. They did elude to other investigations going on with this area and "people"....basically wanting us to let us know of ANYTHING we see or hear while at the property.....long story short this suspected family sounds like they got crap coming their way. Many of them have been in jail/prison already before numerous times....so no doubt they're guilty.
Congrats bootlegger!! Well got bad news yesterday the new property I gained access to was jerked out from under me. Long story short a guy that works for me, who is also a good friend got permission to hunt this farm and upon doing so also got me the green light to hunt with him. So as I posted before we put in multiple food plots hung 5 sets, 2 mineral sites, 5 cameras and 2 mock scrapes(all of which I paid for). We had one set that was on the property line literally barb wire was in the tree. So last week neighbor property owner called my buddy and informed him that the stand was on his tree (this in my opinion could have been debated but why ruffle feathers). So we took it down the next day per his request. This neighbor is also the son of the farmer who farms the property and claims to be a "serious bow hunter". The farmer has seen all the work we have done and no doubt has pasted it along to his son. So the following week the son calls the land owner and complains about us hanging stands on his property and also makes claims that we were on his property, something I would never I mean never do!! I don't even look for wounded deer on another's property without first getting permission. The farm we were on is 300 acres his is 40 we don't need to go on his. The only reason the one stand was on the line was because it was on the east side of a plot we put in. So the land owner who never goes to property and could care less if someone hunts it or not just decided it wasn't worth the drama to have us out there and asked us to remove our stands and not hunt it.. My guess is the little **** will be hunting the place as soon as we r gone and probably has been hunting it for some time. I still have the river bottom property which is were I would have spent most of my time anyway, but the way it went down just frustrates the hell out of me. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Wow Mo Bow I would be furious! That's a huge kick in the nuts. I don't even know what to say. I can't imagine putting the extensive amounts of time and money into a property then having to sit back and watch someone else utilize those efforts.
Hey Nick...you ever thought of trying to find a lease in Illinois edge bordering Indiana? I know you were looking at Indiana but given the right price I'd be interested in a smaller lease/farm over the border in Illinois and willing to split. Neither of us would get there probably more than a handful of times a given year, but could pay off with another option every now and then? Side note fellas, heard the neighbor's we're having issues with are now setting up deer tripods surrounded by bails of hay OVERLOOKING the property we hunt....as in like 20 yards from field edges. Needless to say pictures will be taken and submitted to the dnr...blatantly obvious the stands are oriented towards the fields they do not own.....lovely.
Possibly, only set back with Illinois is the price for a non resident there. Just like u said its only a handful of times would be able to hunt but just gives another option when things aren't so good back at home. You have my number can talk more about it. Are you planning on hunting mornings? If not I would be setting up and watching them to make sure they don't do anything stupid
Just finished hanging a couple of stands on our latest property acquisition about an hour ago, time to head in and see what happens. Between the cold front and corn having been harvested across the road, we're hopping to at least pattern something in the next couple of days from our sets and move if we have to ....... hope the full moon doesn't mess up our plans to much.
50 points for the team and a doe for the smoker for me, this evening I'm a little more picky about shooting a doe than I am a buck and things came together for me this evening. Had several doe pass by before one done everything right. She was the right age, came down the right side of the tree, and offered the perfect shot. I was hunting extremely close to buck bedding and if she hadn't taken all the right steps, I'd of passed again as I hate chasing a do through the wrong part of my woods.
Not hunting mornings the first couple days....perhaps Saturday, but depending on wind not out at that property. I know with getting them on camera slipping onto the state ground last year the DNR are claiming they're going to make their presence known out there more.....we will see. Year later after getting the pictures, the name and address for them of the guy caught and NOTHING done (ongoing investigation bull is all we hear) has me slowly losing faith in our DNR.
Well I made it out for an evening sit out in some public land. Hoping to have something walk the trail this evening. Come on deer you need to check out the inside of my freezer!
Forecast for my neck of the woods is 18mph winds and rain. Heck of a first day coming! I'll be out there and looking to dodge any falling trees.
Alright I'm all set and posted on the scorecard fellas. I almost didn't go out this evening. But I had a feeling it was gonna be a good evening to be out with this storm on its way and the dropping temps. She came up the trail I was sitting off of and presented me with a perfect quartering away shot at about 15 yards. It was a perfect pass through she went about 30 yards and I watched her topple over. Ended up being an ideal hunt really. Got her home, skinned, quartered and on ice until tomorrow when I'll process her up. Feels good to be putting some Veni in the freezer. Here's a few pics.
Awesome stuff, congrats!! Only Oct.1rst and we've got 4 doe down already, only 8 more doe and a few bucks away from the winner circle
