I'm in Roanoke. I search the city areas where the bucks can get big since they can't be hunted. Never found any where I actually hunt haha. Found number 19 this weekend near my wife's grandparents house. I've been wanting to walk this clearcut for years and finally got the chance. Old one but no chews which is nice and rare.
Had an interesting lunch break walk today. I found what I though was part of a human foot/ankle. Called the police who came out and investigated. Turns out it was a pig knee with the skin still on it that was still bleeding so I must have scared off a dog or something that carried it out to the middle of the woods. I'm sure I'll find a body some day with the places I look but luckily it wasn't today.
I took a walk during my lunch break today. Didn't find anything. I find enough bones to recreate 10 deer but no sheds yet. Where do you focus most of your efforts Sheddinva? Are you familiar with the deer movement on the parcels you walk?
I basically look at google earth and just hit every small patch I can find. I kind of know where the deer bed and travel in my good spots but for the most part, they are so small that I can cover the entire area and feel confident I didn't miss any. That's whats so great about the city areas. I walked a lot of mountain land this weekend with a guy and only found 1 old one. I kept thinking of how many I could have found if I had just stayed in the city somewhere lol. After I left his spots I went to one of mine and found 6 and another guy found 4 in about an hour or two.
Found two and a double main beam deadhead that was hit by a train. The two had fresh blood on the bases and the one by the rub still had fresh bark shavings all in it and a lot of mucus looking wax which I've never seen before
Just realized the shed I found the other day is a match to one I found last year. It was a year old I believe when I found it so that means this one has been out for 2 years. I think I forgot to walk this spot which is why I didn't find it sooner but it was in the city several streets from where the other was found.
Still putting a hurting on those sheds I see! I've had my nose in a book studying for the past several weeks. I haven't been out shed hunting for a couple weeks. But hope to make it out at least one more time. Green up has already begun here. Turkey season is only a couple weeks away!
Plan to head out with my brother in the morning to a spot that has been good in the past. Hopefully it will lead to a few.
