Sounds like you had a great evening but no deer. I did get in blind super early in rain and watched sun trying to peek through, but just a steady Eddie rain. Good for duck hunting. I had a group of doe go back into cut shortly after light, so that tells me I am in a good spot. Rain and wind for two more days I decided it would be good to rewash scent clothing and repackage vehicle. Heading to physical therapy this morning then going into lake county metro parks to check my stand site I drew for the next two weeks. I have to shoot a doe first then a buck, I believe Wisconsin is like that. I will rotate stands with my other spots during the hot time. We are in high wind advisory till Wednesday.
Sandy's not here yet but we have heavy winds and rain! Not sure when I'll be able to get out. Jim is that a Itty Bitty Goose release? That's what I use and love it. I have to shoot my bow before I go out again, I dragged my bow through some pretty thick stuff and want to make sure it's still shooting in the same place. What's the rest of the team doing there's more that four of us?
Update - Took Friday off to hunt the cold front...Didn't see much. A couple does and a couple fawns. Same for Saturday morning. I pulled one of my trail cam cards on the way out and got this big boy so there is some hope.
I have a little goose release as my backup. I am using my spot hog wise guy. I walked in the pouring rain on metro park controlled hunt grounds and made it to my stand. They have a 10 foot ladder stand in place with a low corn feeder. They want to reduce amount of deer on property due to herbaceous devastation. You have to shoot doe before you can harvest a buck. Great area just north of grand river in Madison Ohio. I hunt just across the river on private grounds. Huge bucks all through that area. I am allowed to use a climber or hang a stand/ put up a blind too. I had to sign in and out and wear orange to stand. I also checked the total board and only three deer have been harvested so far.
I have some history with this buck (3 years of Trail Cam pics)... and a history of never seeing him in real life (only on trail cam). In fact I don't think I have a day time picture of him at all.
MMG, hope you get him. Sorry 4 the weather Bob, that is frustrating. Here's a question for you guys, so the hurricane is going to increase our winds up to 40 mph tomorrow, should I bother going out? I have a stand in the valley of a crik bottom vs stands on edge of corn fields.
WOW Matt that's a nice buck! That was a quick storm! Never lost power, winds are gone, no damage to the house. Lets see what tomorrow brings.
That's cool Bob. Pretty bad in northeast Ohio. The Lake Erie machine has 20 foot plus waves right now.
I wouldn't be in a stand with 40 mph winds. The tree will be swaying back and forth, hard to steady your sights, your arrow will be affected by the wind, and overall it just sounds a little dangerous.
HOLY CRAP! What a night! didn't get to shoot but the visuals were unbelievable! so I put my self in a blind downwind of my stand about 20yds along a fence line between a picked cornfield and hardwoods. So at 5:20 a small buck 6/8pt came in with 2 grunts about 35 yds looked at me for a second and trotted off into the woods. Another second later out comes the does he dogging with him right behind her. The go bounding off away from me. THEN, about 6 I hear what I think is 2 steps/soft crunch in the cornfield next to me and then a massive 10 ptr with 10"-12" tines jumps right in front of me 15yds and as he lands looks over his left shoulder at me and jumps like I startled him, with a snort. He went out to 35 yrs behind a bush, and looked right at me for a second and nose to the ground into the woods he's gone. That all took about 2 seconds. He was definitely outside the ears as he looked at me. I didn't even have time for my heart to cranked up. The winds here were gusting to about 40 mph, so I wasn't sure I heard those two steps in the cornfield. To top it off my stupid trail cam didn't go off and take his pic. so I'll be out again tomorrow. If I had been drawn he'd been smoked. But he veered off as soon as his rear legs hit dirt. Absolutely crazy out there today. They are definitely in the chasing phase.
Wow, great encounters. I bet you will score tonight. The weather here is slowly getting there. I will get out after physical therapy this morning. I had to put up my crusher blind in basement to dry out.
Wow that's awesome hopefully you'll get a shot at the ten! Good luck Jim! I've seen a couple doe but let them walk. Waiting for a Buck. Sent from my LG-P925 using Tapatalk 2
Well didn't make it out yesterday, overtime at work; gotta take the money. Went out tonight, nothing but them dang squirrels driving me crazy thinkin there a bunch of deer coming my way. I'm huntin at the top of some woods with a whole lot of dry oak leaves, and them dang squirrels running through that area sound like deer coming in. Bummer is nothing showed up tonight. that 10ptr is hauntin me in my dreams; i should've drawn when I heard that faint 2 crunches in the corn next to me, but with the wind howling like it was; hard to determine what's deer & what's just wind blowing stuff around. Man o man that was a really nice buck. I'm hopin he'll be back sometime soon. I'm going to try tomorrow morn if I don't get called in to work. Sorry to hear that Jim, that bites with the flooding. Probable gonna be a couple of days before that water seeps into the ground. Bob good luck to ya! Say what about all the other members on our team? not a word except for a few of us. MMG- how bout your trip, what's up?
