Thanks guys! How's everyone else doing? I know Bob's first day was today. Anyone seeing anything. I'm in the blind now, I don't know how much I'll see, it's almost 60* right now!
I just had first day of rehab on leg and had finance crap to accomplish. I hope to get out tomorrow at one of my good spots.
I'm at one of my stands right now. Its warm and windy. Not too bad though. Hope for the best! Sent from my LG-P925 using Tapatalk 2
I finally drove myself to the Kingsville, Ohio property. I got up and descented and dressed then headed to set up my crusher blind. Beautiful morning and hauled all my gear on my deer hauler. It took me awhile to get back to my spot with foot slowly recovering. I applied primos waterproofing spray and got everything situated. I just had that feeling the deer would return late from the morning trek back to bedding. I figure I would situate myself near acorns and I guessed they would not show until 9:30am. Well around 10:15am I finally spotted a small herd of does but around 80 yards out. They fed off somewhere other than my location but I saw my first deer of the season. I had 2 cameras going. Great day! The fall foilage in northeast Ohio is peaked today. I missed my exit because I was enjoying the color of the trees.
I know what you mean Jim, this is my favorite time of the year. I think my favorite is the golden yellow of the birch trees. Tuesday I got up a 5AM went outside and it was raining so I went back to bed. :0) I worked tonight until 1AM I have a class from 10AM to Noon. I'm thinking about going to my treestand at work from 2 to 4 PM, I start work at 4:30. Who knows I might get lucky!
The deer should be hitting food sources on a more of a demand thing. The rut coming trips the little switch to eat, eat and eat. I use to hunt in Southern Ohio where deer were hitting acorns every 2 hours and the bucks use to cruise scent checking all day. I wish we had more canoe birch here but we don't. Aspens in Colorado is beautiful. I have PT this morning at 8 AM and with temps climbing near 80 , I may just practice with my Hoyt.
Well here I am for the next hour or so before work. On the way to the stand Ifound a scrape not a serious one though. View from the stand. Sent from my LG-P925 using Tapatalk 2
It's right behind my tree stand so we'll see. LOL a little red squirrel just came down my tree to check me out! I don't know if I got him in the picture. Sent from my LG-P925 using Tapatalk 2
I was in my tree stand this morning at 5:45. I started to put my pack up and found ALL my arrows were gone. They popped out of my quiver when going to my stand. I climbed down and there was one on the ground below the stand (thank god). I saw nothing probably because of all the noise I made. I pulled the card from my camera at this spot and I have what looks like an 8 point on it. It's hard to tell because he was there at 2AM beating on a tree. I looked for my arrows after and only found one more so I lost two. I stopped a BPS and got more Rages and when I got home I fixed the quiver so I won't lose any more arrows. I'm thinking tomorrow morning I will take my climber to my favorite spot and see what happens. Now to take a nap before work.
Sorry to hear about your quiver and arrows. You will be ready next time. I made it to the second property where it was select cut three years ago. Great whitetail habitat and found my stand right off the get go. I took my time due to leg stiff and sore from rehab. This marks the first hunt off the ground. I took my sweet time climbing up stick. Difficult but I got in ok. Wind was cranking about 20 mph and ready to rain at anytime. I set foot on this property for the first time in August and hung two stands and I sat in stand 1. It is only 17 feet up but in small patch of maple and sawtooth aspen. I figured this time of year they won't show till 8 am. I looked at overgrown slider trail and here comes three doe. They came straight down wind, which was south east. They came into 35 yards but nervous and a bit jumpy from wind and catching a small whiff of me. A few good size branches covered up my zone so I went full draw but opted to pass. I felt that a bad shot would have occurred with deer on high alert. I think I have them on cannon and Kodak cameras. This spot is so prime! Thank god it is raining now to wash my scent away.
Bob, I had such a rush when I watched those deer come in. I am new to filming and its tough but rewarding at same time. My heart was pounding when I went full draw, Gosh that's why we do this. You just can't beat it!
I know what you mean! My heart races when a squirrel make a noise behind me. LOL Sent from my LG-P925 using Tapatalk 2
I had the opportunity to hunt with Justin today. Justin and I became friends when I coached him in travel baseball. We hunted New Lyme Wildlife Area in northern Ohio. There is swamps along with a man made lake on @800 acres. It is public but only waterfowl hunters were there and we were the only archers. We split up about 500 yards a part and used our climbers. He helped me walk in so that I was able to hunt with my leg. I only went up about 15 feet up and with the canopy still pretty full I could shoot in all directions. I used my binos to see a huge buck walk within shooting distance but it was too dark to film and or shoot. The pace of the buck was slow and steady with his nose to the ground. HD came into me straight down wind and he never knew I was there. The area is rich with red, pin and white oaks and just a ton of water from swamps. We never saw a deer during shooting times but we would have say all day but Justin had to go to work and I had to get my leg up to rest. What a beautiful stand of timber and hardly anyone archery hunts it. We new if we could sit all day we would have harvested something. We both didn't want to leave. Another great day and first day in with my Summit Viper.
