Well, last night I got the camper all packed up, the quad loaded in the truck and got it all hooked up. I got up a little early this morning and drove to President's Island, parked and leveled the camper, unloaded the quad, locked it all up and headed to work. St. Jude is only about 7 minutes from President's Island. This is the same place Aaron will be hunting next weekend. We got drawn for different weekends. I wasn't going to go there, but it seemed like a shame not to, so I'll be leaving work a little early and scrambling over there, jumping on my quad and racing out to mark a couple of spots with my GPS. The hunt starts tomorrow morning. It's supposed to be raining in the AM but the rain will taper off around mid-day. An all day sit wouldn't normally make sense this early in the season, but tomorrow it does. I'd like to be sitting there when the rain stops. I have a good feeling about this weekend. This is a spike buck/doe only hunt, and while I won't shoot a spike, the first doe that gets close is in SO much trouble.
just got home from vacation, i drove close to 1200 miles this week. never would make it as a trucker.
Well guys, I've only made it out one time so far. I have only seen one doe and a 6 point so far. I'm hoping to make it out a couple times this week. Then in 2 weeks I'll be off to Kansas.....
Awesome man I know you gotta be fired up for KS. What are you, 5 for 6 there if I remember right? I'm pumped to hear/see how it goes. What do you call a shooter where you hunt in pa?
Yeah, I'm getting fired up for KS. I'm 8 for 9 out in Kansas with the smallest buck being 140. The one year I didn't get a buck out there I missed a 150 class 8 point. I usually start out by holding out for a 150 or better. In PA, I wont shoot anything unless its a 125 or better. Needless to say, It's been a long time since I shot a buck in PA. But, when you hunt states like Kansas, It kinda ruins the hunting in PA for me.
125" isn't unreasonable really in this area. I have 120 min myself. Man I'm tellin you though I need to get a lease somewhere like KS myself. If your farmer has any friends let me know haha. Good luck if we don't get to talk between now and your trip. have a safe trip and excited to hear from you.
Well still havent heard from Johnny...hope he had a safe hunt... Im back at it tomorrow. Hunting a new stand and pretty excited. Work has not started yet on the property...hopefully it stays that way. Gonna be on the edge of a bedding area and next to a tiny pond there. Should be set up and ready to kill by 10am and hunt it till dark. Well see how it goes...
well got the truck packed and ready to go. gonna scout tomorrow afternoon, then hunt friday- sunday on a wma quota hunt for does and spikes only. i can kill 2. this would be a great time to crissan my bow with my first kill. best of luck to everyone this weekend. stack them up high and deep
well the only one i got a shot at i shot right over her back. it would have been correct distance i would have double lunged her.
Thats the first deer you ever shot at with a bow though right Aaron? Did your heart beat through ur throat? Im glad you had some action bud! I know you had a slow start so glad things changed a bit for you there. Hope when you get back to your normal spot the deer are finally moving for you!
Well had a good camera check today. Have a decent 8 showing up every night by my one stand, no monster but borderline shooter for me. Prob wont decide if hes a shooter until hes in bow range, ill let my gut tell me. But also have a new guy. Hes pretty big, but only showed up once...45 mins after dark. Gorgeous buck though and with the rut right around the corner hes a welcome sight forsure!!!!
yes it was my first. i didn't shake until after the shot. it should be better at normal spot but got to wait until next week, it's youth this weekend so maybe my son will get one.
Nice yeah I hope your boy shows you how its done! I should be back at it tomorrow. Just waiting to see what the rain looks like. With a new big buck fresh on my mind Im fired up!
