OK. Made it to the stand at about 0620 this morning. Bumped one on the way in but made it to the stand without raising too much of a ruckus. I had literally just made it into the stand and hadn't even hooked up the harness, much less pulled up the bow when a small doe came out 15 yards to my left. She worked around behind my stand at 7 yards and came to the trail I had just used. I was just on that trail about 60 seconds before and as soon as she hit my scent, she froze. It took her about 8 minutes to figure out that she didn't want to hang around and when she made up her mind, she let the entire woods know about it. Needless to say, I was feeling pretty bummed after this. I finished getting set up and at 0704, I heard this girl coming through the woods to my 2 o'clock. I caught a glimpse of her before she cleared the trees and saw that she was a shooter, so I stood up and came to a full draw. She stepped out and stopped at 17 yards broadside. I settled my top pin on her shoulder and let it fly. I heard the hiss of the broadhead, saw the green LaunchPad glowing in flight, and heard the "thwack" when it connected. She jumped, kicked, wheeled around, and tore off through the woods. I saw my arrow sticking out of her as she turned and felt like the shot was a touch high. I waited about an hour and decided to head back to town to grab a biscuit and give her a little while longer, just in case.
I came back around 0900 and immediately found my arrow. The shaft was broken and the Killzone missing, but the first 14 inches of the arrow were coated in bright, red blood. Lung shot. It took about 15 yards for the blood to start flowing, but when it did, it was an easy track. I followed heavy blood for about 50 yards and then it was like someone turned off the faucet. No sign whatsoever. I started to fan out from the last spot of blood and after about 5 minutes, I found her! mlr0924 145.jpg She ended up only 15 yards off the main access road that circles the property. In all she ran about 75-80 yards before expiring. Since it's a weekday, I had to take "selfies" with her for the contest. mlr0924 146.jpg mlr0924 147.jpg She's now at the processor and should be deer burgers by next Friday. mlr0924 149.jpg Meat on the table! Like I said earlier, this is my first with the bow (fist deer period in about 12 years) and God willing, not the last. All the hard work, sweat, and planning came together this morning and I could not be happier. Now it's time to get out there and start looking for one of the big boys to lay down.

Great story. We all definitly know that feeling when a doe blows out of the woods letting everybody know she is not happy about something.

Also the same thing you talked about happened to me on my first bow kill. I shot a doe and it looked like somebody was painting the area red for the first 25 yards but then the blood started pooling in her chest cavity and the blood trail dried up completley. Luckily I had a second person with me to help find drops of blood and we found her about 20 yards from where the blood stopped.

Good job on your first bow kill and hopefully you can put some bone on the ground this season as well.

    Awesome! Nice shot buddy.

As far as that first pic. I don't know if I've ever seen a deers lung come out of her nose before....is that what that is?

That was my first thought when I walked up on her. It's actually just frothy congealed blood from her last moments.

No No. I promise no snitch here. One of the guys I hunt with gave me the bug that's going around here pretty bad. Now I ain't sayin he did, and I ain't sayin he didn't give me this God forsaken head and chest cold just to keep me out of my stand and away from the big boys but, it seem a little fishy to me. Now I'm not gonna hurt him because I'm just a business man but you guys might think differently!!

Does anyone else think "The Don" should order a hit?

Well so far we are doing really good. We have two slick heads on the ground and the majority of our team really hasn't even started hunting yet. I know this contest has some big players in it who year in and year out harvest great deer but I really feel like we have a shot at making a run at the title.

Keep up the great work guys!
