Deb, I was thinking that if I had that dik-dik you shot yesterday. I'd just put it on a skewer and hold it over the fire for a few minutes until it was done. ;)
    :busted:

K went out. I have my homework and real work to do today.

Tomorrow I think I'll go out and tag me a big buck. Enough messing around. :D

Frustrating weekend...Slow movement and a few gun shots where a majority of the deer I see spend most of their lives. Don't have access to the neighboring ground. Hope they were shooting does and not any of the big ones I am after.

Well.... Ya should of seen it skinned hanging ... it looked just like a skinned Rabbit.
And that skewer idea came to my mind as well... sick minds must think alike.
But its gonna make some of the Worlds Most Tender Jerky ;)
Got it all cut up and marinated over night and gonna dry it today... yummy :)
Note to self.. No Jerky for Perry or Hoss .. and they are off the X-mas card list as well.
Now go and kill a bigun today !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heading out this weekend during second weekend of gun season. Hopefully they left a few deer out there. Season is still young but it does get tough here after thanksgiving especially on bucks.

We're only like 530" out of first place. :)

Greg... Germ... post your deer in the scorecard!!! :D

I'm still trying... the bigger deer just seem to know they're risking their lives by getting within 25 yards of me. Even the promise of having their picture posted here (and a certain other site) isn't convincing enough for them to give in. Maybe after they've gotten a bit more doe action they'll more willing.

    Hopefully....

    Well.... yeah.

The poor bucks waited all year to get some action... it would be rude of me to kill them just days before they get some hot does. Right? ;)

At least around here it seems like only the small bucks are actually chasing. The big bucks I've seen have been alone or only half-heartedly following does. Even as of yesterday.

In the continued spirit of crappy cell phone pics from the treestand.... I bring you the ginormous coyote pics. You can't tell from the pictures... but take my word for it... I've seen truckloads of yotes and this one was huge.

....and it hung around my stand for a really long time. (over a half hour)

During the evening hunt, four coyotes came in. :(

    They are off-limits where I hunt. :(

I couldn't shoot the big tom turkey that came by my stand either.

Coyotes are annoying enough... but when they make regular appearances and you can't shoot them... you really start to hate them.

    Congrats again Germ!

And to my teammates... I suck. :(

I shot a nice buck this morning but I hit him too far back. Like an idiot I didn't try to stop him as he walked by. It should have been an 18 yard chip shot.

He ran onto the neighboring property and at first it didn't seem like I was going to be able to trail him past the fence. However, the manager of the adjoing property did come and once he looked at the bloodtrail, he let me onto the property and he and I trailed the buck. Unforturnately, as best we can tell.... the buck bedded at the edge of the river and in his death throes (or something) he fell into the river. It's like a five foot drop and he hit some exposed roots on the way down because there's a bunch of blood on them. However there is no sign of the deer in the river. I think he sank. We had a bunch of rain and the river is up and very muddy. ....sniff... cry....

Here's where he went in. You can see the 'kick marks' and the dark liver blood.

I'm going to try and get a canoe in there tomorrow and poke around the river. I'm still holding out some hope (tho' small) that I can recover him.

Not that it matters at this point but I'd guess he'd go at least 140".

I think I caught bad buck hunting mojo cooties from JM. :(

We took a canoe out and searched the area of the river where he went in. There's no sign that he walked or crawled out. The water is 8-10 ft deep in that stretch. only about a foot of visibility. I tried poking at the bottom and at the logjams with a 10' 1x2". The current near the bottom is so strong that I really couldn't poke around effectively. K did his best to keep the canoe in one spot while I jabbed at the river bottom but it was almost impossible. The river is not big at all but the depth, current and trees in the water complicates any recovery effort. We couldn't go very far down the river because of a big oak laying across it. We could have squeezed the canoe under the oak but honestly the river conditions are dangerous with the under current so we didn't risk it.

I'd think that a 250lb deer would just hang up right away on the logjams... but with my luck... who knows where he went. He might be down deep under some of the logs. If the river clears up, I'll go back out and look again but it's supposed to rain again tomorrow.

I'm really bummed. He would easily be my best buck and I really hate to kill a buck just to have it end up being fish food.

K and I headed toward the main river channel. Where we are in this pic was completely high and dry a few days earlier.
