Well fellas yesterday was a frigging crap show. So I went out in the morning and packed up by 9, walked to my truck and got changed and get in and am ready to drive off when I look out my window and there's a 7 point staring right at me (this is in a rock quarry and a wide open area) and he looks sick, you can see his ribs and he's quite frail looking and is not afraid at all. I suspect he has CWD and so I grab my bow and realize that my release is in the back of the truck, the buck starts to walk down a path and I get out go back to the bed and grab my release. At this point I'm in blue jeans, crocks, and a pull over. I start up the road creeping along because there's a creek running parallel and I suspect he's getting a drink, I end up seeing his rumo and walk up 15 yards from him, he turns and looks at me again totally not afraid, I draw back and see one little piece of dead fall and have clearance to the vitals so I let it rip....I failed to notice a limb and hit it...the buck takes two jumps then walks off into a thicket and I go around to try to find him but I believe he ended up crossing the road onto a different piece of private. I simply wanted to put this deer out it's misery and had no problems wrapping my tag in doing so but again I screwed it up. Spend the rest of the day with the family and then go out in the evening and get all set up, if tired and lacking focus and need to pee so I wizz and then just as that's wrapping up 4 doe run my way with one stopping and feeding and coming around into a 5 yard space. I grab my biw draw back and fire....I hear a very foreign sound and start to look for my arrow while the doe just stands there and stairs in my direction (it's windy and so she probably just thinks something broke in from a tree). I then realize that I forgot to nock an arrow and ended up dry firing my bow...the doe walks off and is in too thick of cover to get another shot and I instart to exam my bow and Thankfully no cams are bent and nothing appears to be wrong. After I get home, I take a few shots and everything is still all good. I try to learn with every failure so my take aways were make sure I go through my usual routine of getting an arrow nocked, doing some practice draws, and of course better observe lanes for potential barriers/objects that could impair my shot. Hoping to take my daughter out on Friday bit right now Just trying to mentally recover.

Totally switching it up...heading to the mountains with my oldest - he's gonna fish, I'm going back country with the bow. Deer and Bear season overlap for a couple weeks. So the plan: throw a tent in the car, head to some USFS road with nearby forest & fishing... so this weekend, "if its black or brown, its down...so long as it doesn't have cubs and weighs more than 75#, outside of the bear sanctuary and >150yds from any occupied dwelling adjoining the forest"

I tried not to laugh, but had to...been there brother! Have missed a cow elk & deer hitting a twi; have dry fired one of my oneidas accidently, had cracked nocks blow up and effectively dry fired a couple bows; had cracked arrows blow up and effectively dry fired; hit limbs on my leg & ground; taken a poop and had a deer walk up...just when you think you've done it all/seen it all...

    Stuff happens!

Amen to all that. Sometimes things just seem to not stack up, and in hind sight you can absolutely chuckle a bit. I figure a few days off will be good...I'm already trying to plan my next outing for later in the week. I'm excited to see what we keep laying down!
